Liverpool have an important transfer window ahead in a few months’ time. Though the attention will be on the Champions League final for the time being, Jurgen Klopp’s side will want to challenge Manchester City‘s league dominance and to do that, they’ll have to sign more players and increase their squad depth.
The club will have the services of Naby Keita in the coming summer but considering Emre Can is likely to leave, the club need to ensure they sign a like of like replacement. Keita is more of an attacking midfielder, so Liverpool still need the balance in the midfield and it is said that Klopp could be after Juventus midfielder Sami Khedira to get the same.
Reports suggest that Klopp is keen on signing his compatriot who has had an impressive spell at Turin after moving a more than a couple of years ago.
Sami Khedira – Fact file
Unlike Emre Can, Khedira is a someone who focusses on the defensive aspects of the game. Though he makes the odd dash or two during games, he is predominantly known for controlling the game and denying opposing players space to work around.
After an injury-ravaged spell at Real Madrid, Serie A football has been a better suit for Khedira. So far this season, the German international has made 24 appearances in the league. Surprisingly, he had managed nine goals from the midfield which is the most he has managed in his career in a single season. Despite that though, the defensive capabilities have been pretty sound.
The 32-year old has a pass percentage of 87.2 as well and can be deployed anywhere in the midfield.
How will he fit in at Liverpool?
Liverpool have been heavily reliant on Jordan Henderson this season. Can has been pretty good but he isn’t the player who can play as the deepest of the three midfielders in Klopp’s 4-3-3. Khedira, on the other hand, is the perfect option to sit in front of the defence.
Though Henderson has been immense this season, during games where Liverpool are expected to see a lot of the ball and not press, someone like Khedira could be a better option to spray passes and control the tempo of the game.
He is used to playing ina counter-attacking setup as well and with the likes of Keita and Oxlade-Chamberlain, he could add the balance that could get Liverpool closer to that elusive Premier League title.
