Antonio Conte’s title defence did not go according to plan this season, which might even see him bid adieu to Stamford Bridge this summer. But a win in the FA Cup final against Manchester United might force a change in the scenario even though the chances are slim.
Recruitment plans are in full force though and Chelsea are constantly linked with some of the finest stars in Europe.
One such player, they are apparently desperate for is Toby Alderweireld.
Alderweireld Contract Talks Put Off:
The Belgian defender rejected a contract extension earlier this season which could have seen his wages doubled. And though it was reported that Spurs will sit down with him after the end of the season, it is now revealed that Alderweireld is already on his holiday and is inching closer to an exit.
He is expected to cost around £40m, with just one year left on his current contract and the likes of Manchester United, PSG and Barcelona are all interested in his services. So is Alderweireld a player Chelsea should go all in for?
Alderweireld – One Of The Best:
Having only joined the Premier League in 2014 with Southampton, the 29-year old established himself as one of the best defenders in the league in just two years in the country. He signed a contract with Spurs in 2015 and immediately turned into their first choice CB, putting in some superb performances till the start of the current season.
However, since the turn of the year, after he rejected a deal, The Belgian ace has started just five games for Spurs and is sure to quit this summer.
Known for his cool and composed approach to the game, Alderweireld is an experienced defender, who is hardly fazed by any occasion. He is a confident dribbler and is comfortable with the ball at his feet and can pick passes from deep, that can set off his team on counters. He is also strong and dominating in the air, is quick to step up and make interceptions and is almost impossible to beat in one-on-one situations.
He is yet to win a trophy in England but was the Player of the Season for Spurs in the 2015-16 campaign and is easily one of the best defenders in the league at the moment.
Where Does He Fit In?
Conte decided not to use David Luiz in his first team this season after a certain point, for various reasons and though has found a gem in Andreas Christensen, is still short of options for the backline. Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger have been decent this season but need a partner and Gary Cahill, who is now 32, is not going to play every game of the season.
So they need a player who can walk into the first team and make an immediate impact and Alderweireld is as good an option as any. He is right up there with the best defenders in Europe and at just £40m, is an absolute steal in this current transfer market.
He is also perfect for the style of play at Chelsea and can be a game changer next season. But do you think Chelsea can land him?
