Aston Villa in hot pursuit of Derby County ace: A stupendous move in the offing?

As per reports by Birmingham Live, Aston Villa are tracking Derby County’s attacker, Matej Vydra. Vydra has had a dazzling season in the Championship. Apart from the Villans, West Bromwich Albion are also keeping close tabs on him.

Fact File

Vydra started his senior career with Czech Republican outfit, Vysocina Jihlava, and then moved to Banik Ostrava. In the summer of 2010, he was acquired by Udinese but he failed to cement his place in their side and was shipped out on loans to Club Brugge, Watford and West Bromwich Albion, before signing permanently for the Hornets in 2015.

During the 2015-16 season, he was shipped out on loan to Reading and eventually, he signed for Derby County in the summer transfer window of 2016. He has been an instrumental player for the Rams and it is evident that he has truckloads of experience of English football under his belt. Besides, he has also represented Czech Republican national side on a number of occasions.

How He Fared Last Season?

The 26-year-old plundered 21 goals and also mustered 4 assists in 42 appearances in the Championship season which recently concluded for them after their defeat in the semi-final of the playoffs at the hands of Fulham. He was a livewire in the final third and made his presence felt more often than not. In all fairness, he was arguably the engine room of attack for Gary Rowett’s troops.

Attributes

Blessed with pace and creativity, Vydra seamlessly made Derby County tick up front and he didn’t just create chances but also scored with sheer ease. He is a clinical finisher and has been quite decent during his spell with the current club and during his time with Watford. Moreover, he holds the ball well, tests opposition’s goalkeeper frequently and is a set-piece specialist as well.

Why Do Aston Villa Need Him?

Irrespective of whether the Lions get promoted or not, they will need some freshness and Vydra will be an exciting option for them. Bruce will aim to strengthen his attacking arsenal and signing the attacking midfielder will be a huge statement of intent from them.

Although it is highly unlikely he will come for cheap, Villa must do their part to lure him to the Villa Park in the summer as he can bolster their squad.
