After a morale-boosting victory over Arsenal at the weekend, Newcastle United have finally managed to break into the top half of the table and Rafa Benitez will now want his side to finish this season on a high. He brought the club up from the Championship and has given the fans lots to cheer about in recent weeks.
So it does not come as a surprise that they are looking to extend his stay at the club.
Rafa Admits Contract Talks With Newcastle United:
Speaking to the media after the victory over Arsenal, Rafa, who was asked about stories linking him to the Arsenal job, revealed that he is happy at St James’ and that his contingent has already opened talks with the Magpies over a new deal.
He has just a year left on his current contract with the club but Rafa, who said that though the Arsenal job was flattering, revealed that he is ready to lengthen his stay on Tyneside. Is this a productive decision for the Magpies?
Rafa And His Record:
One of the most decorated managers in the world of football, Rafa has previously managed clubs like Valencia, Liverpool, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Napoli, before joining Newcastle United in 2016. He failed to ensure promotion for The Magpies in the few games he got in the 2015-16 season but managed it in his very first full season in charge, lifting the trophy in the process.
He has limited resources available to him but has done extremely well to get the best out of every player in the first team and the fact that Newcastle United have taken more points than just two other teams in the league in Liverpool and Manchester City, since the turn of the year shows what he can do when given enough time.
He is already chalking long-term plans with the club and though he will have to be lured with financial incentives, Newcastle United should do all it takes to keep him at the club for years to come.
Will Rafa Continue His Legacy?
After a decent season, Rafa’s next step will be to try and fight for a place in Europe. The Spaniard has a knack of getting results against the toughest sides in the country and we cannot put it beyond him to take The Toon back into Europe.
He will have to be backed up well in the transfer market but the issues with Mike Ashley and the proposed takeover at the end of the season might be a thorn in Newcastle’s skin in keeping Rafa at the club.
The manager needs to be shown enough promise that he will be given the right funds to improve the squad and if Newcastle United can give him that confidence, there is no reason why Rafa will want to quit the club any time soon.
