Jose Mourinho’s transfer business at the start of the season was not enough for Manchester United to compete with their fierce rivals Manchester City, who are running away with the league title this season. The manager is desperate to add some quality to his first team this summer but is also desperate to keep hold of star players wanted elsewhere in Europe.
One such player, who is close to signing a new United deal is shot-stopper David de Gea.
De Gea Set For New Deal:
According to an insider from the club, United are ready to sort out De Gea’s future and are set to offer him a new deal, that will see him earn £350,000-a-week, making him the second-highest earner at the club. It is understood that talks with the player’s representatives will take place this month. So is this the best deal United have made this year?
De Gea And His Reputation:
Standing as one of the best goalkeepers at the moment, if not the best, in the game, De Gea has been the most consistent player for the Red Devils for over a couple of years now and has been directly responsible for at least a couple of wins in each of the last two seasons.
A sensational shot-stopper, with insane reflexes and sublime positioning, the 27-year old has 16 clean sheets in 31 league games, where he has conceded just 16 goals, playing in goal for the Red Devils. He has also been effective in the Champions League, keeping four clean sheets in six games, before being knocked out by Sevilla.
He rarely has an off day and is a genuine match winner and will probably walk into most top squads in Europe. So it is a no-brainer for Mourinho to offer him a contract extension.
Will De Gea Take It?
This will be the important question for United. De Gea, born and brought up in Madrid, has spent time at Vicente Calderon before moving to Manchester United and will surely be tempted to move back to the capital city in his home country.
Real Madrid are ready to meet United’s asking price but the Red Devils have now taken a step ahead and are offering him wages which are hard to turn down. United let go of Zlatan Ibrahimovic recently and have freed up wages, which will now be used to retain De Gea.
Winning trophies will be important to retain star players but United may just be able to keep De Gea at the club beyond the summer, thanks to the generous wage structure that is being proposed. If the Spaniard puts pen to paper, it can easily be the club’s best deal this season.
