Jose Mourinho has now spent big on two central defenders in the last two summers but is yet to settle on a partnership at the back, that he can trust for an entire season. He is desperate to change things as they stand and is already looking at CBs who can improve his squad for the upcoming campaign.
One such player, now on their radar is Swansea City star, Alfie Mawson.
United Send Scouts For Mawson:
A transfer target for Tottenham Hotspur as well, Mawson had a decent night in the recent 1-1 draw vs West Brom and reports from The Sun now claim that Jose Mourinho has identified the English U21 international as the right fit for his side at Old Trafford.
The report reveals that the 24-year old could cost over £40m, which the Red Devils are ready to pay but is he the right man for United?
Mawson And His Potential:
Having announced himself in senior English football with Brentford, Mawson moved to the Premier League for the first time with the Welsh outfit and took no time to establish himself in the first team at Liberty Stadium, with 65 appearances for the side in all competitions already.
He has been one of the most consistent defenders in the league recently and has helped Swansea move away from the drop zone and is proving that he belongs at the highest level. Known for his aerial strength and ability to play out from the back, Mawson is a reliable CB who is confident in possession and is usually not wasteful with it.
He loves to throw himself around inside the box and gives his all for his side and will be a huge coup for many teams in the Premier League. He has recently also received a call-up from Gareth Southgate for the national side and though is yet to make his international debut, is destined to play at the highest level.
How Will This Affect Mourinho’s Squad:
The Red Devils spent on Eric Bailly, who seems to be Mourinho’s best choice at the back at the moment, and Victor Lindelof, who is yet to settle in England, in the last two summers but have had to use the likes of Chris Smalling, Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones regularly in the CB role.
Mawson is an upgrade on at least three of those names and his previous experience in the league will mean that he can walk into the first team when needed and have an immediate impact.
At just 24, he has a long future and will surely attract interest from the best clubs in the country. So Mourinho should do what it takes to land him, even if he has to get rid of a squad player or two.
