Recently crowned Premier League champions Manchester City are apparently monitoring the progress of Sporting CP winger Gelson Martins with Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur also showing a keen interest, as per a report from A Bola.
The Portuguese sensation is regarded as one of the most highly rated youngsters in Europe at the moment. His exceptional performances in the LIGA NOS has attracted interests from a host of top clubs around Europe, including Borussia Dortmund.
That being said, however, it’s Manchester City, who have shown a significant amount of interest in the 22-year-old.
Even though Manchester City have arguably been the best team in Europe this season, largely due to their hugely successful league campaign, where they have already gathered 90 points in just 34 games, Pep Guardiola will still be keen to refine his squad in the upcoming summer transfer window.
The Citizens haven’t found it difficult to find the net this season, scoring almost 100 goals but that being said, their frontline striker Sergio Aguero is highly linked with a move out of Etihad. Therefore, Pep Guardiola could ideally heed the services of a new attacker this summer and the addition of Gelson Martins could be perfect for the Sky Blues, in that regard.
Although Gelson Martins isn’t exactly the same player as Sergio Aguero, the Portuguese youngster could definitely bring in some much-needed tenacity in the final third, especially with David Silva being in the final stages of his dazzling career.
In fact, star winger Leroy Sane has also been a subject of some keen interest from FC Barcelona, who have already identified the German international as a long-term replacement for Lionel Messi, as per reports. Furthermore, the performance of Raheem Sterling in the UEFA Champions League has also been questioned, throughout the course of this season.
Gelson Martins can, therefore, provide Pep Guardiola with an extra option in the attacking department whilst also boosting the overall quality of the attack. His pace and dynamism are ideal for Pep’s Juego de posicion style of play, meaning the 22-year-old is bound to get loads of freedom in the attacking third due to Pep’s approach of gaining numerical superiority in the attacking third of the pitch.
Following many fruitful years at Sporting CP, the youngster finally looks set to take the next step in his career and a move to Manchester City could ideally help Gelson Martins to further improve his overall game and potentially emerge as one of the best players in Europe.
