It was yet another fascinating Saturday of high drama, nail-biting events and top quality football in the Premier League. Here is a brief summary of what transpired in the English top flight today.
Burnley Stun 10-Man Everton
Cenk Tosun gave Everton the lead after his goal in the first-half but Burnley secured a comeback win as goals from Ashley Barnes and Chris Wood secured all three points for Sean Dyche’s side on his 250th game in charge.
The disappointing day for the visitors was made worse when Ashley Willams was shown the red card for raising his arms against Barnes and Everton have now lost 7 out of their last 10 games under Sam Allardyce. Apparently, time is running out for Big Sam!
Moment Of Magic From Mahrez
Joshua King opened the score sheet after engineering a coolly finished penalty-kick and there is no denying that the Cherries seemed to be in quite some authority of the game against the Foxes.
However, drama unfolded with the last kick of the ball as Riyad Mahrez scored the equalizer in the 97th minute to salvage a point for his employers. Although Leicester City have now gone 5 games without a win, they would take the solitary point after having stared the face of defeat.
Hammers Hammered Away From Home
West Ham United were blown apart by a hungry Swansea City side at the Liberty Stadium earlier today. The Swans secured a magnificent 4-1 win over the Hammers as Ki Sung-yueng, Mike van der Hoorn, Andy King and Jordan Ayew found the back of the net.
Michael Antonio struck a consolation goal in the second-half but it was too late for David Moyes’ side to manoeuvre a commendable comeback. As if the loss was not enough, Winston Reid suffered an injury blow to pile up more misery for West Ham United.
Son’s Brace Earned Spurs Another Win
Heung-Min Son scored a couple of goals against Huddersfield Town as Tottenham Hotspur managed to bag a comfortable win at the Wembley Stadium. The victory for the Lilywhites earned Mauricio Pochettino his 100th win as a Premier League manager.
The Terries lacked the industry that was required against a top-quality side and by seeing them ply their trade today, it would not be absurd to state that they were really meek and bereft of ideas. Meanwhile, Pochettino’s side keeps marching on!
Saints and Potters Chalk A Frustrating Draw
Southampton and Stoke City shared points after their goalless stalemate at St. Mary’s as neither of these two sides managed to evade from the perils of being in and around of the drop-out zone. However, the Potters should thank their custodian, Jack Butland, for his heroics between the sticks.
Butland kept the home side at bay as he put forth a series of superb saves to deny Southampton from troubling the score sheet. However, Stoke City would hope that Mame Biram Diouf’s shoulder injury, which took him out of the game in the first-half, is not too serious.
Deeney’s Day!
Troy Deeney mustered all three points for Watford after the forward made an impeccable use of Will Hughes’ through-ball and fired the ball past Ben Foster in the second-half. As a consequence, the Hornets are now placed at the 9 spot in the league standings with 36 points to their name from 29 outings.
West Bromwich Albion did have some really good chances to lead had Grzegorz Krychowiak hit the target early on. Besides, Salomon Rondon could have done better in the one-vs-one situation in the second-half. The Baggies are now in deep trouble.
Liverpool Lived Up To The Expectations
Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane pencilled a handsome victory for Liverpool against a timorous Newcastle United side as the Reds retook the 2nd spot in the league table. Jurgen Klopp’s men were cunning, industrious and showed great hunger to win and definitely deserved to take all three points against the Magpies at the Anfield.
Liverpool kept winning most of the battles in the middle of the park and they marauded forward with a charm of their own. On plenty of occasions, Rafael Benitez’s men committed themselves forward but the home side were resilient at the back and didn’t let Newcastle United make any serious trouble for Loris Karius.
