Star Attacker To Be Offered New Tottenham Hotspur Deal: Well Deserved?

With a comfortable victory over Swansea City, Tottenham Hotspur have made it to the semi-finals of the FA Cup this season but failing to qualify for the Champions League next season will turn the current season into a mediocre one.

Regardless, Mauricio Pochettino is already planning for the future and is scouting for some of the finest stars in Europe. He is also desperate to retain star players at the club for years to come and one such player, who is open to pledging his future to Spurs is winger Son Heung-Min.

Son To Be Offered A New Deal

Having turned into a consistent goal scorer this season for Spurs, the 25-year old winger is one of the most in-form players in the Premier League at the moment. After the early promise, he has managed to put in stellar performances and reports now claim that Spurs are ready to open talks over a new long-term deal with the South Korean international in the upcoming weeks.

He has a couple of years left on his current contract with the North London giants and is reportedly open to signing a new deal at the club. Is this the right move by Spurs?

Son And His Numbers

Having joined Spurs back in 2015, Son struggled to make it to the starting XI initially but came to life in the previous season, plundering 21 goals and 10 assists in all competitions for his side. He is well on his way to matching that this year, having already picked up 18 goals and nine assists this season.

He is the top goal scorer for Spurs after star striker Harry Kane and with the English international out for at least a month, the 25-year old winger is now the most productive player for the side in front of goal. His return has put Son at the top of the list of goal scorers in the league from Asia and at just 25, he is yet to reach his peak as a footballer.

Gifted with pace, nifty footwork and brilliant composure in front of goal, Son is an intelligent player who can exploit space and time afforded to him in the final third. He has played as a false 9 role a few times and could be a good back-up for Kane.

Can They Depend On Him In The Long Term?

The contract extension this year will mean that Pochettino is convinced that he is a long-term solution to Spurs’ problems on the wings. However, rules in his home nation require him to offer at least 21 months of national service before the age of 28, which will mean that he will lose a couple of years of football any time before the 2021-22 season.

That will dampen the mood regarding this deal but Spurs cannot afford to lose him anytime soon and are absolutely spot on in trying to tie him down to the club in the long term.
