Premier League giants Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a huge summer move for Barcelona defender Samuel Umtiti, as they look to strengthen their defensive department next season.
According to reports, the Red Devils are willing to trigger his release clause of £54m as well as doubling his wages, should he opt to move to the Premier League this summer.
The Frenchman has been transformed into a key player in the Barcelona setup, following his move from Lyon back in 2016 and his impressive performances this season have attracted interest from a host of European clubs, including Manchester United.
Even though Manchester United are arguably having their best season since the post-Ferguson era, this campaign, the Red Devils aren’t showing enough promise, which could potentially help them lift the Premier League title in the coming years. Currently second in the Premier League table, the Red Devils have stuttered behind their city rivals Manchester City throughout the entirety of the season and also run the risk of losing their second spot to Liverpool in the near future.
While lack of attacking potency has definitely been a problem for Jose Mourinho’s side this season, the defence has also been unconvincing, despite conceding the second least goals so far this campaign.
The temerity of Chris Smalling and Phil Jones have been questioned throughout the course of the season, meaning it may be time for Manchester United to settle for an upgrade in the defensive department and the addition of Samuel Umtiti could be a welcome move for the Red Devils.
Umtiti has been one of the most impressive players for Barcelona this season. The Frenchman has built a strong and formidable defensive partnership alongside Gerard Pique, which has helped Barcelona stay on top for almost the entirety of the season.
Known for his no-nonsense philosophy of defending, Samuel Umtiti is someone who never takes any unnecessary risks, which is ideal for Jose Mourinho’s defensive-oriented gameplay.
Much like Sokratis of Borussia Dortmund, the Frenchman is very cautious and aware of his responsibilities in the centre of the backline. He is also a very good reader of the game while his unmatched physical prowess can be intimidating for any attacker in the world.
Samuel Umtiti, will no doubt prove to be an instant upgrade for the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and even Marcos Rojo. His partnership with Eric Bailly will significantly strengthen the backline for Manchester United, ultimately giving them more freedom in the offensive areas of the pitch.
