Manchester United linked with another Arsenal star: The right player for Mourinho?

Manchester United were busy in the last two transfer windows and are likely to be pretty active in the summer as well. Jose Mourinho hasn’t been able to challenge Pep Guardiola for the league title, so we could see a spree of signings.

Reports indicate that United are eyeing a move for Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey whose contract situation is quite delicate at Arsenal. The Welsh international was widely expected to sign a new contract but talks are yet to materialise.

Michael Carrick will be retiring come summer and with Marouane Fellaini’s future still not sorted, United need some reinforcements in the midfield.

Aaron Ramsey: The right man for Mourinho?

As a player, Ramsey is all about flair and creativity. His exploits going forward on the pitch are unmatched as his close control, good passing range and the ability to pick the right man inside the box is praiseworthy. Ramsey has been the mainstay of Arsenal’s midfield in recent years ever since Santi Cazorla’s unfortunate time with injuries.

When played in the right position, Ramsey is an exceptional midfielder. He scored in two cup finals and has become a fan-favorite at the Emirates. His attacking game is absolutely mesmerising at times as Arsenal do have some pretty good attacking players who combine well with the Welshman.

However, there is a certain aspect of the game that often goes unnoticed. Ramsey’s tactical discipline lets him down at times, and that is something that a manager like Mourinho would never tolerate. Mourinho demands his players to be technically and tactically competent.

While making his forward forays, Ramsey often leaves a lot of space behind. He then fails to track back whenever the team loses the ball and hence the defenders are often exposed. As a box-to-box player, he hardly focusses on the defensive aspect of his game. That is something United don’t need as they already have a similar player in Paul Pogba

The Frenchman showed it in the first half of the season that he can do what Mourinho asks of him. A dip in form coupled with some injuries mean that he hasn’t been able to play in his best form yet, but that doesn’t mean United need another player like him.

Pogba is a much better, younger box-to-box player than Aaron Ramsey. The stakes of the summer transfer window are such that every star player is getting linked to the Red Devils. However, United should target a much disciplined and technically adept player like Fabinho or Jorginho rather than the Welshman.
