The progress made under Jurgen Klopp has been quite brilliant for the Merseysiders as they find themselves in the quarter-finals of the Champions League and putting pressure on United’s tail for the second place in the Premier League.
However, the development has taken place more in the attacking department. The defence still requires some tweaking as they continue to look vulnerable. Jurgen Klopp did address this issue with the record signing of Virgil Van Dijk but the problem is far from being solved.
The German coach is reportedly eyeing a move for Real Madrid right-back Dani Carvajal in order to strengthen his right back options.
What does Carvajal offer?
Liverpool now have three established right backs in Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Nathaniel Clyne who is yet to feature this campaign for The Reds due to a long-term injury. The inclusion of Carvajal into this mixture of players brings in huge strength to this area and also some squad depth. We have seen with the likes of Manchester City who have spent big on their defensive recruitments. Something similar has to take place at Anfield in order to solidify this defence and provide some added steel to it.
His arrival could also provide an extra option for Jurgen Klopp at centre back in the form of Joe Gomez. Primarily a centre-half turned right back due to injury concerns in that area, he could be reverted to his original and more favoured position.
Injection of ultra energy for the gegenpressing?
All of Jurgen Klopp’s sides are known to possess energy throughout the pitch. The energy which translates into the gegenpress helps Liverpool be deadly in attack and takes their game several notches higher. Dani Carvajal promises to bring in just that. His pace and energy that he displays on the flanks are just what Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp need. As a natural athlete, his forward running will provide an extra edge to the already lethal looking attack.
How likely is it to happen?
The Spaniard signed a contract extension recently that keeps him tied to the club till 2022. As an integral member of Zinedine Zidane’s side, it will be a tough nut to crack for the Anfield officials if at all Jurgen decides to prioritise his signature. However, his performances from last season have dipped slightly and could be a deciding factor. It also remains to be seen whether Jurgen Klopp wants more additions to his right back given that he is happy with his current options following Clyne’s return from injury.
