Celtic might be edging towards yet another Scottish Premiership title but there is no denying that they have not been able to emulate the domestic superiority that they carved last season. Brendan Rodgers’ men are currently placed at the top of the Scottish top flight table, having collected 68 points from 30 league outings, and although they have played a game less than second-placed Rangers, they have a lead of 10 points over their arch-rivals.
Brendan Rodgers is expected to make some quality additions to his ranks in the summer and the goalkeeping slot is expected to be one such area he might focus on. As per one of the latest reports by Daily Record, he has placed Manchester City goalkeeper, Angus Gunn, on his radar. Apart from the reigning Scottish champions, Gunn has also attracted attention from Paul Lambert’s Stoke City and thus, it would be intriguing to see which club eventually manages to acquire his services.
Next season, the Bhoys would need a decent deputy to their no.1 shot-stopper, Craig Gordon, who is currently nursing a knee injury. On-loan Dundee keeper, Scott Bain, has been used between the sticks of late but he is due to return to his parent club at the end of this season. Dorus de Vries has been unconvincing and his days at the Celtic Park seem to be heavily numbered. Thus, their apparent interest to sign Gunn on loan makes a lot of sense.
Gunn emerged through the youth ranks of Norwich City and Manchester City and was shipped out on loan to the ranks of the Canaries at the start of the season. The 22-year-old has managed to engineer a stupendous season for Daniel Farke’s side as he has notched up 14 clean sheets from 38 appearances in the Championship, making 2.74 saves per game on an average. His loan deal is proving to be a beneficial one for him and his sound goalkeeping abilities have been pretty much evident.
The Englishman is unlikely to get too many opportunities at Manchester City anytime soon as Pep Guardiola has Ederson and Claudio Bravo to cater to his goalkeeping needs. However, a loan move to Celtic could benefit him massively as the Celts are unarguably a formidable side and he would have the guidance of a brilliant manager in Rodgers. Besides, the chance of tasting the Champions League should also appeal to Gunn and thus, such a deal should benefit all the parties involved.
