Brighton & Hove Albion Targeting Valencia Forward: A Smart Deal In The Offing?

After their promotion to the Premier League, Brighton & Hove Albion have not exactly played dazzling football. However, pretty football was hardly high on their agenda as Chris Hughton is a pragmatic manager. Surviving the drop was the biggest task and they have done well in that regard.

Hughton’s side have picked up 34 points from 30 games and could be a couple of wins away from guaranteeing their safety. If the club survive, they will have the chance to make use of the summer transfer window by bringing quality players to the AMEX Stadium to challenge for a more respectable finish next season.

As per latest reports, Brighton & Hove Albion are keen on landing Valencia’s Rodrigo Moreno. Rodrigo has been in a brilliant form in La Liga this campaign and has plundered 13 goals in 28 appearances. He has also mustered four assists, but he is more of a goal scorer than one who sets up others in front of goal. Though Valencia didn’t go far in the Copa Del Rey, Rodrigo scored 3 goals in 6 games in the competition.

It isn’t surprising to see Albion lining up for the 27-year-old striker who is capable enough to ply his trade anywhere in the midfield as well. Rodrigo emerged through the youth ranks of Flamengo, Ureca, Celta and Real Madrid. He started to get due recognition during his time with Benfica and was shipped out on loan to Bolton Wanderers.

In the summer of 2014, he was sent out on loan to Valencia before permanently moving to after the 2014-15 campaign. His knack for goal scoring is pretty evident and he would be a pretty good addition. He is pretty composed on the ball and has a pretty good burst of pace which will come in handy for a side like Brighton who tend to play on the break.

The biggest downside is he is used to playing alongside creative players at Valencia, something he won’t necessarily get at Brighton though. Besides, he has very limited experience of English football and given the animosity that the Premier League offers, it would be intriguing to see whether he manages to thrive or not if his move to Brighton & Hove Albion eventually materialises.
