Arsenal have failed to make their presence felt in the race for clinching the Premier League title this season. Besides, they suffered a premature exit from the FA Cup and lost the League Cup final to Manchester City. Winning the Europa League would hand them an automatic entry to the Champions League next season but they still have miles to walk.
The club’s stature has massively declined in recent years and some sort of resurrection would be needed next season. We do expect to see a breeze of changes next season and here are three such moves that the club should make to better their credentials next season.
Au Revoir Monsieur Wenger!
There is no denying that Arsene Wenger’s name will always echo in the pages of Arsenal’s history for innumerable good reasons but perhaps it’s time to take a drastic step in the summer. The north London based outfit is in a dire need of a managerial change, which has been long overdue.
Wenger seems to have lost the edge that he once had and more often than not, his tactical nous have flattered to deceive of late. Although the club is still in the Europa League, a top-four finish in the league table seems to be out of their hands now. A galvanizing name would be required to be lured to the Emirates Stadium in the summer to fill Wenger’s shoes to instil fresh spirits into the troops.
No Non-Sense Defensive Line
Arsenal’s back line has been timorous once again and has been criticized a lot of times this season. The same saga has been happening time and again under the stewardship of Wenger and the lack of the resilience offered by their defence has been one of the major reasons for their downfall this season.
The likes of Shkodran Mustafi and Laurent Koscielny have hardly been able to inspire their teammates with their performances. Per Mertesacker is well beyond his prime whereas Hector Bellerin’s form has been sporadic. Irrespective of who manages Arsenal next season, he would need to bring ramifications to the defence to enhance their chances of lifting silverwares next season.
Look Beyond Cech
Petr Cech, Arsenal’s 35-year-old shot-stopper, is the first choice option to cater to the club’s goalkeeping needs. Although they have David Ospina in their ranks, they must bring a notable custodian to their armoury in the summer by hook or by crook as Cech’s seems to be nearing towards the concluding stage of his career.
It has to be mentioned that Ospina and Cech’s game time has been managed pretty well by Wenger but the thirteen-time English top-flight winners do need a goalkeeper who is relatively younger than Cech and could compete against Ospina for a place in the starting line-up next season.
