According to reports, both Arsenal and Chelsea are apparently monitoring the contract talks between Luke Shaw and Manchester United.
The England fullback, who has been promised a new deal at Manchester United by head coach Jose Mourinho, has experienced a huge turnaround in his career, since returning from his long-term injury. The former Southampton defender has started in five of United’s eight games so far this year.
Luke Shaw, himself, is keen to secure his long-term future at the club but he may have to wait another year or so. As per reports, his new contract deal could see his current £80,000-a-week wages rise up to as far as £120k to £150k, which is apparently causing a delay on United’s front.
This delay has alerted both Arsenal and Chelsea, both of whom are presumably looking for a left back in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Chelsea, in particular, have shown a lot of intent of signing a left back in recent months. Although head coach Antonio Conte failed to land his desired option in Alex Sandro this January, the Italian did sign Roma left-back Emerson.
That being said, however, the 23-year-old Brazilian isn’t expected to be a first-team regular at the club and has been clearly brought in as a backup for Marcos Alonso. And considering the fact that Marcos Alonso’s explosive form might see interest in him skyrocket in the near future, Chelsea might soon be in dire need of a left-back who can quickly get used to the Premier League, much like Alonso.
Manchester United’s Luke Shaw could be an ideal candidate for the Blues. The former Southampton defender has already shown huge promise in the Premier League, having performed well in almost all of his matches this year.
With Roman Abramovic’s wish to see Chelsea playing ‘fantasy football‘ next season, the likes of Luis Enrique or Thomas Tuchel’s appointment next season is virtually guaranteed, meaning the Blues could finally embrace the possession-based football next season.
Hence, it would be easier for Luke Shaw, who is extremely superior in playing out from the back, to evolve under the likes of Thomas Tuchel or Luis Enrique. The English international has also polished his defensive credentials under the guidance of defensive-oriented Jose Mourinho, making him a complete package for any Premier League side.
Manchester United were looking at Tottenham superstar Danny Rose and Fulham starlet Ryan Sessegnon in the same position, therefore, it would be interesting to see how Luke Shaw’s transfer saga takes shape this summer.
