The January transfer window might have shut a couple of days ago but various clubs have already started to put players on their radar to beef up their squad in the summer. Arsenal were one of the clubs to make some shrewd decisions last month. Henrikh Mkhitaryan was brought to the Emirates Stadium in a direct swap which saw Alexis Sanchez moving to Manchester United.
However, it was the blockbuster signing of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund for a club-record transfer fee of £55million (plus £5million in further add-ons) on the deadline day that grabbed the headlines of the major dailies. Aubameyang is not only a popular figure and icon of the game but is someone who should be able to enhance the attacking armoury of the Gunners to an enormous extent.
The North-London outfit have fallen behind in the race to clinch the Premier League title as Manchester City are unarguably the favourites to clinch the silverware. Nonetheless, they are in the process of constructing a strong side to mount a serious challenge to earn their fourteenth league title in the near future. As per one of the latest reports by the Guardian, Arsenal are understood to be interested in signing Max Meyer from Schalke 04.
Meyer’s contract with the German Bundesliga outfit expires in the summer and he is yet to sign an extension with them. Thus, the German international has been a subject of interest from a lot of big clubs, including Liverpool and AC Milan, although it has been reported that the Royal Blues have offered a staggering deal of €5.5million-a-year to persuade him to stay.
It would be intriguing to see how the scenario shapes up from here but Arsenal would be laying their hands on a dazzling midfielder if they manage to make Meyer sign on the dotted line in the summer. He is capable of plying his trade as a central midfielder, as well as a central attacking midfielder and his versatility is something which sets him apart.
The 22-year-old holds the ball well, manoeuvres scrumptious and precise passes more often than not and despite his young age, he has accumulated plenty of experience under his belt. He still has many areas to address and look into in order to be a polished article but he is still young and does have the calibre needed to succeed. Arsenal brought Sead Kolasinac from Schalke last summer and they would strike gold if Meyer follows suit in the near future.
