As per one of the rumour mills by the Guardian, Wolverhampton Wanderers are in contention to sign AC Milan forward, Andre Silva, in the ongoing January transfer window to add more quality to their attacking options. Reports state that Swansea City are also believed to be monitoring him closely as they have money to spend following the departures of Fernando Llorente and Gylfi Sigurdsson last summer.
Silva, after being a revelation at FC Porto, was lured by the Seria A outfit in the summer for €38million on a five-year deal. However, the striker has not lived up to the expectations of his current employers so far this season. The Portuguese has failed to find the back of the net even once in the league after featuring 12 times for the side. However, he has smashed 6 goals in 6 Europa League outings and apparently, there is no dearth of admirers.
Wolverhampton Wanderers have made a strong statement this season in the Championship this term under the stewardship of Nuno Espírito Santo. They are currently placed at the top of the league table with 62 points from 27 games and have a handsome lead of 10 points over second-placed Derby County.
With the side pretty balance, there is a good chance that Wolves will be playing Premier League football in a few months’ time. However, the step up from the Championship to the Premier League is massive, so it’s no surprise that the side are looking to improve their squad already.
Their apparent interest to sign the Portuguese international makes sense, for he is a lethal poacher inside the box and is clever with his movements in the final third. The 22-year-old passes the ball well, is clinical and is quite decent in the air as well. Besides, he has the pace as well, so he could be used well in a counter-attacking approach.
Jorge Mendes, his agent, has been instrumental in bringing quite a few quality players to the Molineux Stadium of late and Silva seems like the next to follow. Leo Bonatini has been primarily used by Espírito Santo this season to lead Wolves’ attack but if they can manage to sign Silva, he could possibly take over as the first-choice striker in the near future. Certainly a Premier League quality player.
