After a disappointing draw against Southampton in the Premier League, Tottenham will have to prepare themselves for a clash against Newport County this Saturday. Pochettino’s side are in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 but the fans would love a deep run in the FA Cup. Though they’re expected to name a weakened lineup for the clash against Newport, they are still likely to ease into the next round.
Pochettino’s side are doing pretty well and with a decent squad to choose from, here’s how Tottenham could line up for the clash against Newport:
Defence
Michel Vorm will return in goal to take over the Cup keeping duties. Juan Foyth was given a run out in the last FA Cup game and could get another chance. Jan Vertonghen, however, could be rested for Eric Dier who might get the nod at the heart of the defence.
We could see the duo of Kyle Walker–Peters and Kieran Trippier as the two full-backs. The latter was used as a substitute in the last game which means he is likely to get the nod over Aurier. Ben Davies has seen a lot of first team action, so expect him to get a breather.
Midfield
Victor Wanyama is expected to play in front of the defence and we could see a midfield role for Moussa Sissoko. The Frenchman has played there before and considering Spurs have a big next midweek, we could see both Dembele getting a rest.
Dele Alli could start in the number 10 role. The Englishman hasn’t been in the same form like he was at this stage last season and a good performance against Newport will go a long way in boosting his confidence.
Attack
Fernando Llorente is expected to lead the line and he’ll be supported by the duo of Eric Lamela and Son Heung–Min. Lamela has been gradually integrated into the team and with every passing game, he is starting to look sharper. So, he could play a key role in the league when up and running.
Llorente needs to make a statement as well. Kane has been doing a lot of the scoring while the Spaniard has mustered just two goals the whole season and won’t get a better chance to increase his goals tally come the weekend.
