According to latest reports, Liverpool have finally won the most talked about transfer race to acquire the services of Dutch sensation, Virgil van Dijk. The report states that the Reds have had a world record £75m bid accepted by Southampton and hence edge out Manchester City and Chelsea who were the two main competitors.
This is certainly huge and a pleasant surprise for Liverpool fans given that their club was involved in a rather acrimonious battle with Southampton over the summer and was subject to an official complaint by the Saints.
If the Reds can tie the loose ends and ensure the transfer goes through without any more hiccups, this will be an almighty boost to both their Top 4 and Champions League ambitions this season.
While their attacking prowess is famed and feared all over Europe, it is no secret that Liverpool’s struggle to keep clean sheets is very real! Individual errors, technical shortcomings and a lack of quality sum up their current defence and the addition of Van Dijk will be a real shot in the arm for the whole squad.
While there are a couple of areas of the squad which needed to be fixed before Liverpool could start off a season as genuine title-contenders, this was certainly the most important of the lot.
