Tottenham Hotspur started their European campaign with a thumping victory over Borussia Dortmund this Wednesday as they put three past the Bundesliga side to claim all three points. Their league form, however, has not been up to the mark and Mauricio Pochettino is already thinking about adding to his squad. They could only manage a draw against Swansea and failed to breach the goal.
The Argentine brought in some top class players to the side in the transfer window but one player he now wants to sign in the next window is Thomas Delaney.
Pochettino is reportedly unhappy with the options at his disposal in the midfield and wants Danish international Thomas Delaney to partner his national compatriot Christian Eriksen in London. Also wanted by West Brom, Everton and even Burnley, the 26-year old has been in sensational form recently playing for Bundesliga outfit Werder Bremen.
He is contracted with the club till 2021 and will not be easy to lure out but the Sun claim that Spurs are front-runners to land him, but not before the end of the season.
An Academy product of one of the best academies in his country in Copenhagen, Delaney moved to Werder Bremen just this January, after spending nine years and making 244 appearances in the top flight in his country. Since moving to Germany, he has turned into a beast of a player, cementing a place in the first team.
A central midfielder by trait, Delaney has the perfect blend of strength, attacking prowess and defensive discipline, which is clear in his numbers. He averages 2.2 interceptions per game, and creates close to a chance every game, registering five goals and an assist in 16 appearances in the Bundesliga.
He is strong in the air and is adept at playing an attacking role but is more effective in a central role, where he can work wonders in the Premier League.
At 26, he still has room to improve and Pochettino wants him to do so in the English capital. With the likes of Eric Lamela still injured, Pochettino is forced to use the likes of Heung-Min Son and even Moussa Sissoko in an attacking role on the flank.
The front-three of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and Harry Kane has been productive enough to bail them out of danger but they need a star name to complement them and Pochettino seems convinced that Delaney is the right man.
He may not be an established, European superstar but the 26-year old solves impending problems at the club and could be a huge addition to the squad. However, Spurs will not be able to land him until next summer so they are well advised to try and get the best out of the players they have the club for this season.
