Newcastle snatched a win yet again out in the middle as they beat a formidable Stoke City 2-1 with goals from Christian Atsu and Jamaal Lascelles. The captain now has led his side to two victories in a row with two winning headers.
He has got 6 points for Newcastle single-handedly, one could say. After two games of distress and tension, Rafa and the Magpies have found their way and the winning formula. They now have got 9 points from first five games, a start they would not mind and one they haven’t had in 17 years now.
Here are our Newcastle United player ratings –
Rob Elliott – 8.5/10
A couple of sharp saves, got down on the left beautifully, distributed the ball well.
DeAndre Yedlin – 8.5/10
He bombed down the right with great pace, played with discipline and didn’t waste possession. A good display.
Jamaal Lascelles – 9/10
Captain to the rescue again. Take nothing away from him, he led his side and ticked every single box.
Ciaran Clark – 8/10
He matched players every time he faced them. He was the strongest on the pitch last afternoon. Won almost everything in the air.
Chancel Mbemba – 7.5/10
A decent display of holding one’s line, not committing and sitting back to defend.
Isaac Hayden – 6.5/10
Not as convincing going forward as last week, but a tidy performance. Shrugged off players with ease.
Mikel Merino – 6/10
He looked stable and strong in possession, but positioning could have been better. Should not have given room for Shaqiri to express himself.
Matt Ritchie – 9/10
Sublime! Pure quality! He was excellent with his service into the box, provided two assists. Match winning performance.
Ayoze Perez – 8/10
Good game, didn’t try too hard like the week before. He burst into life at times and entertained the fans. He created space for his teammates when required and got into wide positions too.
Christian Atsu – 8/10
Got the goal, was in better form as he started. He looked sharper and stronger, he had a better understanding with the wingers. Brought in raw pace.
Joselu – 7/10
Showed glimpses of sharpness, put in the hard work but missed the opportunity to get on the scoresheet.
Substitutes
Dwight Gayle – 6/10
Brought in some pace and fresh legs, could have done better with his movement.
Jonjo Shelvey – 6.5/10
Energetic display! Will be looking to start ahead next game. Was selfish on one occasion to not have passed to Matt Ritchie and take a wasteful shot.
Mohamed Diamé – NA
