After their promotion to the English top division, Newcastle United haven’t really chiselled an appealing start in the Premier League. The Toon have lost both their games which comprised of outings against Tottenham Hotspur and Huddersfield Town and one of the notable points which have been deciphered by seeing them ply their trade is their blunt attacking tooth up front.
The Magpies haven’t scored a single goal after bagging the right of playing in the league of elite clubs of the country and it has emerged as a really worrying sign for Rafael Benitez. The former Napoli boss has made some decent signings this summer like Jacob Murphy, Florian Lejeune, Christian Atsu, Joselu, Mikel Merino and Javier Manquillo and is now preparing to make a late dash to further bolster his striking arsenal before the curtains of the summer transfer window fall.
As per one of the latest reports, it is understood that Newcastle United are attempting to lure Internazionale’s gunman Stevan Jovetic to St. James’ Park, who is valued at £17million by the Serie A outfit. Jovetic’s stature in the ranks of the Black and Blues has been reduced to that of an outcast and it is believed that he isn’t a part of Luciano Spalletti’s tactical nous. His exit from San Siro seems imminent and no wonder that he has fallen on the radar of the Geordies.
Jovetic is familiar with the Premier League, having plied his trade for Manchester City in the past. Last season, he was shipped out on loan to Sevilla, wherein he made 21 appearances and scored 6 goals in the process and created as many as 21 chances. The 27-year-old is a very versatile player who can operate as an out-and-out striker, as a no. 10 behind the striker as well as on either wing and has the requisite technical and tactical understanding edge which makes him a decent commodity.
Blessed with a brilliant first touch, Jovetic is comfortable with both feet, creates ample amount of chances for his teammates and his goal scoring prowess would be a welcome addition for Newcastle United, who have been dumped by Nottingham Forest from the League Cup earlier this week. At this stroke of hour, Benitez’s side does need a poacher who could score goals regularly and with the availability of a proven goal getter like Jovetic, they should attempt to make the deal cross the line.
