Transfer story
Newcastle United look to make Florian Lejeune as their next signing from Eibar. The French defender had a disappointing one-year spell in England previously with Manchester City. The 26-year old was signed by City from Girona in 2015 but never made a first-team appearance.
The Magpies have reportedly agreed terms with Eibar over a summer transfer. But, Lejeune will be hoping that this time, it would be a pleasant spell in England.
Arsenal and Tottenham were also linked with the Frenchman this summer. The Mirror has claimed that the Toon Army will pay £8.7 for his services.
Rafa Benitez is said to be impressed by the centre-half who will become Newcastle’s second summer signing after Christian Atsu. The latter was on loan with the Magpies last season and the deal has been made permanent this summer.
Player stats
Florian Lejeune is a tall centre-half with 35 appearances in all competitions last season. The 26-year old has 1 goal and 1 assist to his name as well.
The Frenchman averages a whopping 10 defensive actions per game. With almost 6 clearances per game, Lejeune is one who will do anything to stay clear of danger. He also averages around a block per game.
The Frenchman is a strong figure at the back. He is very good in the air and has averaged over 4 aerial duels every game winning 3.
The former City man averaged around 5 long balls per game as he likes to play long. (Stats via Whoscored)
What’ll he offer to the club?
He is a player who is always aware of the danger and acts very quickly. Specifically, this aspect of his game can be seen through his clearances stat. The former City man likes to play long balls very often and is very accurate as well.
On the contrary, he is poor in the disciplinary context of the game. The 26-year old got booked 7 times last season with one of them being a red card.
On the whole, Lejeune would be a strong addition to the Newcastle side. He could form a very good partnership at the back with Lascelles.
Worth the money?
Florian Lejeune is said to have a £8.7 million release clause in his contract. There are strong reports suggesting that the Magpies have already signed the player but waiting for official confirmation.
At £8.7 million, the French centre-half will be a good value for money with the abilities that he possesses. With Newcastle ready to stake their claims in the Premier League next season, Lejeune is a perfect addition to the Tyneside club.
