Manchester United Determined To Land This Barcelona Speedster: Mourinho’s Genius At Play?

Manchester United’s search for a stellar left back seems to be still ongoing and recent speculations state that Mourinho is presently interested in fighting for the unsettled Barcelona left-back Jordi Alba.

The La Masia graduate, although featured regularly for Barcelona in the La Liga last season, was left frustrated due to his lack of involvement in key Champions League knockout fixtures under manager Luis Enrique.

“The Special One” apparently is looking to strengthen his full back options as he is unconvinced with Luke Shaw in that position. Wary of being complacent, Mourinho is already making strides to sign a quality left back and the 28-year-old speedster seems to be on the Portuguese’s top wishlist.

And in what has come as a boost to the Red Devils, Barcelona are ready to sell the fullback and have apparently encouraged Mourinho to make a move.

Nonetheless, let’s take a look at the player’s stats and evaluate for ourselves what the Spanish International could contribute at Old Trafford.

Player Stats

The player has made 38 appearances in all competitions for the Blaugrana last season going on to score 1 and assist 7 goals in the process. Certainly, the player has the creativity and potency to give the lethal touch in the final third of the pitch.

The 28-year-old has also maintained a pass success rate of 89.2% making 28 key passes along the way. Certainly, a true fullback, he has paired up with Neymar on the left to cause a lot of problems to opponents this past season which goes to show his attacking ability, something fundamental to a modern day full back.

He is also quite prompt and staunch in his defensive tactics at the back which could be well understood from his tackle success rate of 68.11% and 31 interceptions for the La Liga club. (Stats via WhoScored)

What’ll he offer the Club?

Pace, width and consistency are the obvious answers. Not being impressed by the commitment of Shaw, Mourinho had to rely on Blind, Young and sometimes Darmian, all of whom although quite good but are not true left backs lacking speed and consistency in that position.

With Jordi Alba, Manchester would get the added width on the field which would suit the playing style of the Red Devils and with the lethal pace he could give any defender or full back a run for his money.

Plus, he could play both as a wingback and also a defensive midfielder on the left, giving added options to the gaffer in deploying the individual.

Certainly a lucrative prospect to have at Old Trafford, Mourinho should run the extra mile to make this happen.
