Newcastle United targeting this £15m-rated England International: A smashing move by Rafa?

Transfer Story

The newly promoted side Newcastle United are looking to add some fresh names into the squad early in the summer. This has seen them target Arsenal full-back Kieran Gibbs.

Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez is adamant on improving his defence as he aims big things for the new season. And Gibbs might be a good signing for the club from Tyneside.

Other Premier League clubs have also been keeping an eye on Gibbs’ situation at Arsenal. Arsenal would be willing to sell the player for a fee in the region of £15 million.

Gibbs has been frustrated with the lack of opportunities this season. A move to Newcastle may be the right choice for him as he looks to revive his career.

Player stats

Gibbs had only played a mere 1168 minutes in all competitions for Arsenal this past season. He registered 2 assists for the Gunners in the process.

He has been quite impressive when given the chance. He has completed 82% of the passes and has a minimum of 4 defensive actions per game.

The 27-year old English full-back has also won 40% of the tackles he has made. On the attacking front, he has created a chance per game for his team.

The stats produced by Kieran Gibbs seem to be decent enough considering the limited number of opportunities he received.

He has been a bit part player for Arsenal with Nacho Monreal replacing the English left-back and could be further pushed down the pecking order by Sead Kolasinac’s arrival. (Stats via Whoscored)

What’ll he offer to the club?

Gibbs is a classic left full-back who keeps a decent balance between defence and attack. He likes to make the bursting runs forward occasionally.

At 27 years of age, he has got enough experience to fit in at Newcastle United. He is an FA Cup winner with Arsenal and has Champions League experience under his belt too.

He has the pace that aids his attacking capabilities and is a good tackler as well. Rafa Benitez will have a good asset if they can pull this signing off.

Most importantly, Gibbs provides that extra support for the midfield with his overlaps. His crosses pretty good and he passes where Paul Dummett is weak. Although Dummett is decent defensively, he doesn’t add much to the team while going forward and that’s where the Arsenal full-back can be a real asset.
