With age and passage of time, of course, players engaged in the game of football have to ponder about making decisions which they would have never even thought of while they were in their prime. John Terry, a player whose name needs no introduction, is about to see his Chelsea contract expire and is looking for new endeavours for the next campaign.
If the latest reports are to be believed, Aston Villa are inching closer to unveiling the Chelsea legend at the Villa Park this weekend. An exit was imminent, for he had indeed become surplus to the requirements of Antonio Conte at the Stamford Bridge, although there appears to be no dearth of his admirers who are keen to make him put pen to the paper.
Terry has been offered deals from the Chinese Super League, Major League Soccer, some Premier League and Championship outfits, but considering the manner in which the scenario is playing out, the Claret and the Blues are apparently in the driver’s seat and are firm favourites to sign the former English international.
Steve Bruce couldn’t yield the requisite dividends the last term with the resources he had at his disposal, as he could manage merely a 13th place finish with his troops with 52 points, courtesy a late dash. To uplift the productivity of the club, he needs someone proven and ambitious and no wonder why he turned his attention to John Terry at the London-based club.
Interestingly, the 36-year-old is inclined towards fighting for promotion rather than plying his trade with the likes of Bournemouth and Swansea City where he would be seemingly likely to get into intense relegation battles. And of course, he would not have to lock horns against the club that gave him a recognition and pedestal to thrive in English top flight for around two decades.
Terry is a veteran centre-back who is a sound, reliable and hard working figure at the backline. He excels aerially and keeps things neat and tidy with his sharp tackles and interceptions. Besides, he has truckloads of experience under his belt and with his leadership abilities, he marshals his teammates meticulously to meet the objectives of the club.
If the deal actually materialises, the Lions would be able to cater to their defensive needs by one of the finest defenders of Premier League and it could well be a galvanising move to shake the Aston Villa players out of their apathy and make them a genuine contender for promotion next term.
