Transfer story
After winning the Championship and ultimately securing a comeback to the Premier League, Newcastle United are aiming to spend big to extend their stay in the first division. Reports have claimed that manager Rafa Benitez is set to receive a transfer kitty of £70 million this summer. A chunk of that amount is expected to be spent on shoring up the back line as Benitez’s side have been linked with some defenders over the last weeks. One such name is that of FC Copenhagen’s Peter Ankersen who has been the most consistent player for Denmark’s title winning side.
After making his loan move permanent from Red Bull Salzburg, Ankersen has impressed in the right back position. His performances have led to his extensive scouting by the likes of Galatasaray, Marseille, Newcastle and Valencia. The Magpies hold the aces at the moment and are ready to sign him at just over £3.3 million.
Player info and stats
Ankersen emerged from the academy of Esbjerg fB but soon left for Vejle Boldklub after turning 18. He impressed at Vejle and soon caught the attention of Norwegian side Rosenborg BK. After a year in Norway, he returned to his parent club and became an instant hit. His good form saw him secure a move to Red Bull Salzburg but due to limited opportunities, he was sent to FC Copenhagen on loan. He has been immense for the Danish giants and has helped his side to stay unbeaten throughout the season.
Of the 26 games played this season, Ankersen started 24 of them and had a hand in 11 of their goals. He scored 3 and assisted 8 in what has been a breakthrough campaign for the right back.
What he’ll offer to the club?
Ankersen likes to surge ahead and overlap the winger to have an influence in the final third. Copenhagen’s style of play is to have wide men being supported by the fullbacks to provide quality crosses in the box for their target men. It has been highly successful so far as Ankersen has provided delicious crosses into the 18 yard box week in week out. With Alexander Mitrovic in the side, Ankersen can provide width and crosses to the towering striker.
Worth the money?
At just £3.3 million, Ankersen can be a steal for the Magpies as he has been one of the best players in the Danish league for the past couple of years and looks like a player who is destined to be a success in the top leagues. And at just 26 years of age, he has just hit his prime as Newcastle will get a value for money signing who can provide them with huge profits in the next few years.
