Jose Mourinho’s winless record at St. James’ Park stayed intact as Manchester United were beaten by a resurrected Newcastle United side which was desperate to clinch all three points today. Rafael Benitez’s men took the lead through Matt Ritchie’s goal in the second half, which eventually proved to be the only goal of the game.
Here is our Newcastle United player ratings from their magnificent win over Mourinho’s men.
Martin Dubravka 9/10
The custodian made his debut for the Toon and made the most of it. He pulled off some stupendous saves, including his attempts to deny Anthony Martial and Michael Carrick from scoring.
DeAndre Yedlin 7/10
Yedlin struggled against Alexis Sanchez quite often but his offensive prowess while galloping forward pegged United back.
Jamaal Lascelles 8/10
He was stupendous in the air and time and again, he frustrated Romelu Lukaku. He organised the backline in a perfect manner.
Florian Lejeune 8/10
Lejuene was rock solid especially in the aerial duels and made some good clearances in the match.
Paul Dummett 7/10
The left-back was good offensively and tracked Anthony Martial diligently.
Matt Ritchie 8/10
Ritchie showcased immense work-rate and exuberance and was lively on the flanks. He moved the ball well across the pitch. His goal proved to be the difference between the two sides. Match winner.
Jonjo Shelvey 8/10
The midfielder had one of his better days and knitted the side together with his passing and vision. He occasionally moved forward to rattle Manchester United’s defence and looked a far better player than his celebrated adversary Pogba.
Mohamed Diame 8/10
Diame stopped Martial and Jesse Lingard from producing much and nullified Mourinho’s attackers with his sheer positioning and physicality.
He engaged well with Dummett in the final third and his pace and movements troubled the opposition. He engineered a great shot which was saved by David de Gea.
Ayoze Perez 8/10
Perez was always active in his attacking midfield role and won possession for his employers time and again.
Dwight Gayle 8/10
Gayle not only offered his attacking tooth up front but also catered to the defensive needs of his side after Manchester United started to get forward to trouble Dubravka.
He replaced Gayle for the final ten minutes and played a key role in running down the clock as he won a couple of rash challenge from the visiting side.
Christian Atsu 6/10
Atsu was shrewd at defending the attacking endeavours of Sanchez.
Isaac Hayden NA
He was brought on for Perez in the dying moments of the game.
