Liverpool ‘Hijack’ Newcastle United’s Move for Tricky 22-Year-Old Winger

Liverpool have reportedly made an 11th-hour hijack of Premier League rivals Newcastle United’s move for Osasuna winger Victor Munoz.

Newcastle United have been in talks with the 22-year-old over a move to Tyneside, after they sold Anthony Gordon to Barcelona. However, Liverpool have pipped the Magpies to the signing of the tricky winger, who is presently representing Spain at the World Cup.

According to a report from The Athletic, Liverpool have triggered Victor Munoz’s €40million (£34.6m) release clause at Osasuna, and it is understood that they have staff in the United States to conduct his medical. If the Spaniard signs on the dotted line, he will become the first signing of the Andoni Iraola era at Anfield. He is expected to pen a six-year deal with the Reds.

A product of the academies of both Real Madrid and Barcelona, Munoz signed for Osasuna last summer and enjoyed his breakout season in La Liga. The Spaniard chipped in with six goals and two assists in 34 league appearances during the 2025-26 season to help Osasuna narrowly avoid the drop, whilst also bagging four goal contributions in two Copa Del Rey outings. The youngster’s impressive performances caught the attention of several clubs across Europe, but it is Liverpool who have won the race for his signature.

Victor Munoz to Liverpool—Right option?

Strengthening the attacking options has been Liverpool’s priority in the transfer window since Mohamed Salah left the club at the end of last season. Hugo Ekitike will miss around half of the new campaign due to an Achilles injury, while Federico Chiesa is expected to move on this summer after finding opportunities hard to come by under the previous head coach, Arne Slot.

Thus, the signing of Munoz makes complete sense for the Reds. Andoni Iraola employed a fast, direct and attacking brand of football at Bournemouth, and the Liverpool fans will expect the same from him in Merseyside. In the Spaniard’s system, Munoz will compete with the club’s current wide options. He can operate on both flanks and will bring dynamism, pace, industry and directness to a Liverpool side that looked lost going forward several times last season.

The two-cap Spanish international could potentially form a strong partnership with Milos Kerkez on the left flank. At 22, Munoz represents a long-term acquisition for the Reds, and if Iraola can help improve his decision-making and end product in the final third, he’d prove an astute value for money signing.
