Top 3 expensive transfers in this January transfer window: Man City dominate

The winter transfer window has just ended, and the Premier League clubs flexed their financial muscles to make a lot of expensive signings.

Though a few clubs like Chelsea and Liverpool were not active in terms of incomings and instead focused on departures, the likes of Manchester City, Manchester United, Aston Villa and Wolves proved to be among the biggest spenders.

Manchester City, of all, grabbed the headlines for their spending spree, welcoming four new players for more than £170 million – the second-biggest transfer spending in January window history behind Chelsea’s £274m in 2023.

Here we take a look at the top three expensive deals from the January transfer window.

1. Omar Marmoush ( Eintracht Frankfurt to Manchester City) – £59 million

It was considered a huge let-off by many after Manchester City failed to sign a replacement for Julian Alvarez, who sealed a big-money transfer to Atletico Madrid in the summer.

However, they managed to fill the void in January by bringing in Omar Marmoush from Eintracht Frankfurt, who had a sensational 2024/25 season. His rich vein of form piqued the interest of an array of European heavyweights, but it was Man City who won the race by coughing up £59 million for his services.

With the 25-year-old, City have snapped up one of the best in-form talents in Europe. His wide range of skills and flexibility to play as a striker and a No.10 make him a tailor-made option for Pep Guardiola.

The Egyptian international has all the tools to become a success in the Premier League.

2. Nico Gonzalez ( FC Porto to Manchester City) – £50 million

Manchester City capped off their January transfer business with the acquisition of Nico Gonzalez from FC Porto on the deadline day in a deal worth £50 million.

City were linked with an array of midfielders in a bid to find a replacement for injured Rodri, and they ended up signing Gonzalez. Although the former Barcelona star has a different profile from Rodri, his all-round capabilities make him a good addition to the Sky Blues. The 23-year-old has been in fine nick for Porto and will be looking to hit the ground running in the Premier League.

3. Abdukodir Khusanov ( RC Lens to Manchester City) – £33.5 million

Abdukodir Khusanov made history by becoming the first Uzbekistan player to feature in the Premier League after Manchester City signed him from RC Lens for £33.5m.

The young centre-back enjoyed a rapid rise at Lens, going from an unknown commodity to one of the best young talents in Europe.

However, his debut with the Cityzens was a baptism of fire, as his erratic display against Chelsea drew a lot of criticism.

But Khusanov is an incredible talent and can quickly make his mark with the Sky Blues.
