Atletico Madrid are reportedly considering re-signing Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho.
Alejandro Garnacho and Marcus Rashford were left out of the travelling squad for the Manchester derby by boss Ruben Amorim on Sunday. Without their participation, the Red Devils came from 1-0 down to win 2-1 against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League.
The young Argentinean has been recalled by Ruben Amorim for the trip to north London to take on Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Thursday. However, that hasn’t stopped the player from being linked with a move away from Old Trafford.
According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Atletico Madrid has made Alejandro Garnacho their main target for the January transfer window. The La Liga side’s manager Diego Simeone feels the 20-year-old could be ‘key’ to strengthening his attacking unit, particularly in the wake of Antoine Griezmann’s possible departure at the end of the season.
A product of the Atletico Madrid academy, Garnacho joined the Manchester United academy in October 2020. He signed his first professional contract with the club in July 2021.
Alejandro Garnacho to Atletico Madrid—Should Man United sanction a deal?
Manchester United have wholeheartedly embarked on the new Ruben Amorim era, who replaced Erik ten Hag as the new head coach at the start of November. The Portuguese tactician has brought a new system to the club—a 3-4-2-1 formation—that helped him taste rich success in his previous clubs namely- Casa Pia and Sporting CP.
In Amorim’s new system, Alejandro Garnacho has been in and out of the starting XI. In a bid to learn about the strengths and weaknesses of his current squad at Man United, the young coach has been giving opportunities to everyone to shine. Being an out-and-out winger, Garnacho has yet to adapt to the new system. He has been used more off the bench, with the likes of Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford, Rasmus Hojlund, Mason Mount and Joshua Zirkzee preferred as inside forwards by the manager.
Yet, one cannot ignore the fact that Garnacho is still only 20 and has a lot of time to develop in his career. The Argentina international is a sublime talent with huge potential, which is why Man United scouts identified him four years ago and pushed the club to sign him from Atletico Madrid. He is flashy, explosive, bold and raw—attributes which you expect from a young wide player.
Amorim has nurtured plenty of young talents at his previous club Sporting CP, and nothing suggests he cannot do the same with Alejandro Garnacho, who with 10 goals is United’s top scorer this season. He is just starting his career at Old Trafford and there is still plenty more to come from the Spanish-born prodigious talent.
That said, Man United must keep hold of Garnacho at all costs despite Atletico Madrid expressing an interest in re-signing him in January.
