Arsenal are reportedly interested in a summer move for Bayern Munich winger Leroy Sane, owing to Bukayo Saka’s persistent injury issues.
Bukayo Saka has arguably been the Gunners’ best player in recent years, thanks to his consistently brilliant performances and match-winning contributions. The England international is already one of Mikel Arteta’s vital players, but injury problems piling up of late has left a few question marks over his availability.
Perhaps with that in mind, the north Londoners are planning to recruit a right-winger as a cover for Saka. Former Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United scout, Mick Brown has exclusively told Football Insider that Arsenal are working on a deal to sign Leroy Sane on a free transfer from Bayern Munich.
Sane, 28, is into the final eight months of his contract at the Allianz Arena. The Germany international has endured a tough start to the season, thanks to a combination of injury problems and fierce competition in wide areas. The summer signing of Michael Olise from Crystal Palace, and the good form of Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman has limited the 28-year-old to just four substitute Bundesliga appearances.
Leroy Sane to Arsenal—Should Mikel Arteta go ahead?
Arsenal are planning to strengthen their options out wide after experiencing a quiet summer transfer window. They are unlikely to sign Raheem Sterling permanently from Chelsea at the end of the season and Mikel Arteta wants someone to compete with Saka.
Sane’s contract situation at Bayern has alerted several clubs across Europe including the Gunners. The Premier League club’s interest in the Bayern star is understandable. Arteta wants two top-quality options for every position, and the 28-year-old can solve that problem due to his ability to play anywhere across the frontline.
With two Premier League titles, one FA Cup trophy, 39 goals and 43 assists in 135 appearances for former club Manchester City, the German is a player with a huge pedigree and has the qualities to make an immediate impact for Arteta’s side. Sane could certainly provide a spark to Arsenal’s attack whilst being a fantastic option to rotate with Saka. In addition, he can also give something different to the north Londoners when operating centrally as compared to his compatriot Kai Havertz.
With his Bayern contract due to end in June, Sane will definitely be one of the most sought-after free agents in the market. The ex-Man City ace’s volumes of experience at the highest level, winning mentality and versatility would help boost the mentality of Arteta’s squad. That said, the Gunners must look to agree on a pre-contract with Sane in January.
