Manchester United slumped to their eighth Premier League defeat of the season on Saturday as David Moyes’ West Ham United secured a 2-0 victory at the London stadium.
It was an entirely uneventful start to the encounter, with neither side managing to create anything meaningful in the opening exchanges. The first chance came in the 34th minute when Alejandro Garnacho fired a tame shot at Alphonse Areola when played clean through on goal by Antony.
Jarrod Bowen tested Andre Onana early on in the second half with a strong header, but the Manchester United shot-stopper tipped it over the bar. Minutes later, West Ham were in front through Bowen, who continued his sensational goalscoring form by bundling home from close range from an exquisite Lucas Paqueta pass. Mohammed Kudus netted the second to seal the deal for the hosts after Kobbie Mainoo was guilty of ceding possession in the middle of the park.
With Erik ten Hag’s side failing to build on the positive result at Liverpool last weekend, let us take a look at how the Man United players fared in the defeat to West Ham in east London.
Manchester United Player Ratings vs West Ham
Andre Onana—6/10
Good save to deny Emerson’s effort in the first half. Came on tops to tip over Jarrod Bowen’s powerful header and was excellent with his footwork. Made half a save on Bowen’s opening goal but unfortunate with the rebound, then well-beaten for the second from Mohammed Kudus minutes later.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka—5/10
He was a steady performer on the afternoon, combining well with young debutant Willy Kambwala on the right. Offered little going forward, though.
Willy Kambwala—7/10
Slotted in impressively in central defence besides Jonny Evans and looked assured on the ball on his full debut. Not at fault for either goal. Arguably the only bright spot in Man United’s defeat to West Ham.
Jonny Evans—5/10
In the absence of four centre-backs, Jonny Evans was the leader of the visitors’ backline. Made a crucial interception in the first half. Could have done better to narrow down the angle for Kudus, though.
Luke Shaw—5/10
Man United’s best player on the pitch in the first half. Dealt well with Kudus in the opening 45 minutes but him tucking into midfield more after the break allowed the West Ham attacker open space to run into too often. Didn’t fare well going forward and wasn’t alert to Bowen’s opener.
Kobbie Mainoo—5/10
Controlled and calm on the ball, Kobbie Mainoo kept things ticking over in the middle of the park. Dropped deeper at times to initiate attacks. However, the youngster was culpable for West Ham’s second goal as he lost concentration and possession.
Scott McTominay—3/10
Dropped back into midfield to help Mainoo and to some extent was tenacious against the West Ham midfielders. Had no impact in the final third whatsoever.
Antony—3/10
Played in Alejandro Garnacho for the standout chance of the first half but otherwise did little. Desperately poor at times, with the winger’s lack of execution and decision-making. Subbed off.
Bruno Fernandes—4/10
Picked up some good positions first half and pulled the strings well for the Red Devils. booked after a foul and subsequent reaction. High on energy as usual but wasteful.
Alejandro Garnacho—4/10
Lively again on the flanks but lacked the finishing touch. Had a great chance to give United the lead when he was put one-on-one with Areola but the Argentinean’s tame shot was saved by the West Ham goalkeeper, and that profligacy proved to be costly later on.
Rasmus Hojlund—3/10
Another quiet afternoon for Rasmus Hojlund. Failed to trouble the West Ham defence in any manner and was subbed off early in the second half.
Substitutes
Marcus Rashford—3/10
Ineffectual after he replaced Hojlund. Took a long time to get his first touch on the ball, and by the time he did the game was gone.
Facundo Pellistri—3/10
Didn’t do much when he came on the pitch at 1-0 down.
Christian Eriksen—3/10
Made his return from injury but came too late to influence things for the visitors.

Late substitution.
