Manchester United are reportedly keen to sign Borussia Monchengladbach forward Marcus Thuram in the January transfer window.
The France international, 25, has entered the final six months of his contract with Borussia Monchengladbach and the Bundesliga club are open to selling him next month. Gladbach value the striker at a paltry £9.6million as they don’t want to lose him for free at the end of the season.
According to Sport Bild, Manchester United have been given a boost in their pursuit of Marcus Thuram after Gladbach’s decision to cash him in next month.
Thuram came on against Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final’s first half to good effect. The striker’s physicality and height up top helped France stage a dramatic comeback before they were eventually beaten on penalties by Lionel Messi’s Argentina. He ended the World Cup campaign with two assists in five appearances.
Before playing a part in France reaching the World Cup final, Thuram had netted 10 goals in 15 Bundesliga appearances during the first half of the 2022/23 season. He is currently one of the Bundesliga’s top scorers, and the 25-year-old’s goal-scoring exploits with Gladbach have also caught the attention of Arsenal, Tottenham, Newcastle United and Liverpool, the report adds.
Marcus Thuram to Man United—Good move for Erik ten Hag?
After the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag is believed to be in the market for a striker in January. Jadon Sancho hasn’t been at his best for a while now, while Anthony Martial’s fitness problems put a question mark on his regular availability to the manager.
Marcus Rashford has managed to regain his form under Ten Hag this season but he is out of contract at the end of the season, although the club does have the option to extend it by another 12 months. Amidst the Red Devils’ search for a new striker, Ten Hag’s club have been linked with World Cup stars Cody Gakpo and Goncalo Ramos as well as Juventus hit-man Dusan Vlahovic.
Marcus Thuram is also on Man United’s radar. The Frenchman can play anywhere across the front three, and his physicality, aerial ability and power would add a new dimension to United’s attacking play. Ten Hag is looking for a player who can score and create goals, and Thuram fits the bill perfectly, as evidenced by his 41 goals and 26 assists in 199 appearances for Gladbach.
The ex-Guingamp man will bring quality and depth to United’s attacking unit, which Ten Hag needs to challenge the likes of Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea for major trophies. As Gladbach have seemingly put a price tag of as little as £9.6million on his head, the Red Devils could bag a snip by signing Thuram when the transfer window reopens in the New Year.
