Man City In A Three-Way Race For Dazzling German Playmaker: The Player Pep Needs?

Manchester City are reportedly interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz, as Pep Guardiola plans to reshape his midfield unit ahead of the 2025/26 season.

The Sky Blues have confirmed that Kevin de Bruyne will leave at the end of the season on a free transfer. A modern-day club legend, De Bruyne has been instrumental to the club’s rise as a force in England and Europe, and his release will leave a huge hole in Pep Guardiola’s squad. Thus, the club are looking out for the Belgian’s potential replacements.

According to Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas, Manchester City held talks with Florian Wirtz and his family on Tuesday after they flew from Germany to England. Negotiations between all parties are ongoing, and Man City remain hopeful of concluding a deal for the in-demand Bayer Leverkusen star.

Bundesliga behemoth, Bayern Munich, are also pushing hard to sign the Germany international and are confident they can convince him to join while the player’s representatives also held a meeting with newly crowned Premier League champions Liverpool.

However, City are in the race and not backing down.

Undoubtedly one of Europe’s most exciting youngsters, Wirtz, 22, has enjoyed another fantastic season with Bayer Leverkusen. With 16 goals and 15 assists across all competitions, he has further cemented his status as a top talent across the continent. Therefore, it is not surprising to see the player being coveted by several clubs heading into the summer transfer window.

Florian Wirtz to Man City—Can he make City a force in the UCL again?

Man City chiefs are looking to refresh their squad after the 2024/25 season which has been disappointing by their usual high standards.

The Cityzens suffered their earliest UEFA Champions League exit for 12 years, losing 6-3 on aggregate to Real Madrid in the knockout phase playoffs. It was an extremely limp Champions League campaign, which saw them miss out on automatic qualification to the round of 16, after finishing 22nd in the new format of the competition.

In terms of their Premier League campaign, Pep Guardiola and Co. are fourth in the standings and doing everything possible to qualify for next season’s elite European competition. Pep Guardiola is in desperate need of a revamp, with several key players ageing. De Bruyne will leave at the end of the season, Ilkay Gundogan turns 35 midway through the next season and Bernardo Silva has been a shadow of his former self.

This has made the addition of fresh talent a necessity, and Florian Wirtz is viewed as a top target to lead the midfield revamp. The 22-year-old has been identified to replace club legend De Bruyne, thanks to his creativity, flair, movement and vision to unlock rigid defences. The German can play in different positions across midfield and attack, and he would be a perfect fit in Guardiola’s flexible system.

That said, City must not hesitate to break the bank for Wirtz’s acquisition as he has the potential to transform the team and make them a force in the Champions League next season.
