Liverpool join list of admirers of Alexander Isak: Good option for the club?

Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak when the transfer window reopens this summer.

The Reds have been fantastic in Arne Slot’s debut season, leading the Premier League table by 13 points and having qualified for the Champions League knockouts by finishing first in the newly formed 32-side league phase system. They are also in the Carabao Cup final, so it is turning out to be a spectacular first season for Arne Slot.

However, preparations for the next season have already begun as Slot looks to make changes to his squad as per his image. According to a report from The Times, Liverpool have joined the list of admirers of Newcastle United star Alexander Isak.

Isak, 25, has been one of the players of the season so far, with 19 goals in just 24 Premier League appearances. The forward has also netted twice on the Magpies’ run to the Carabao Cup final, where they will meet Liverpool at Wembley Stadium on March 16.

Due to a minor groin injury, he missed Newcastle’s 2-0 Premier League defeat at Anfield on Wednesday, with Eddie Howe’s side failing to register a single shot on target. This further illustrates how vital the Swede is to the Toon Army.

Alexander Isak to Liverpool—Good option for the club?

Isak has established himself as one of Europe’s best young strikers in the last two years. He has been at the top of his game this term, and considering how toothless Newcastle were in the 2-0 defeat to Liverpool in midweek, Howe will be desperate to have his talisman fully fit for the Carabao Cup final in mid-March.

The Reds have an excellent attacking unit led by the mercurial Mohamed Salah, who is hot favourites to win the Premier League Golden Boot. Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz have also chipped in with important goal contributions, while Diogo Jota—when fit—has made an impact. Darwin Nunez, however, continues to struggle with self-belief and his work rate has been recently questioned by Slot.

It looks like time is running out for Nunez at Anfield. It would not be surprising if the Reds decide to cash in on the Uruguayan international and replace him with Isak, who represents the type of forward the club has historically coveted. The Sweden international has been firing goals left, right and centre, and at 25, he appears ready to move to a bigger club than Newcastle.

A Premier League-proven commodity with high ceiling, Isak would be a huge upgrade on Nunez and immediately enhance the Reds’ attacking unit. The ex-Real Sociedad man will also be a strategic fit into Slot’s system, perfectly completing his current squad. He has the qualities to provide a fresh attacking dynamic whilst improving the Merseyside club’s overall squad.

All in all, Liverpool must go all out for Isak’s signature in the summer as his potential arrival could be viewed as a statement of intent across the Premier League.
