Liverpool are reportedly eyeing an ambitious summer swoop for Newcastle United star Alexander Isak.
The Reds have been phenomenal in Arne Slot’s first season in charge of the club. They are leading the Premier League table by seven points and also qualified for the automatic Champions League knockout rounds by finishing first in the league phase.
Having not signed a player in the past January transfer window, the club chiefs are planning to back Arne Slot in the summer transfer market. Now, according to an exclusive report from Football Insider, Liverpool are looking to offer Darwin Nunez as a makeweight in a deal to sign Alexander Isak from Newcastle United.
Newcastle value the Swedish striker in excess of £100million, which perhaps isn’t feasible for Liverpool to meet. Thus, they will look to sweeten the deal by including Nunez, who is valued at around £60million by the Merseysiders.
Isak, 25, has been sensational for the Magpies this season with 17 goals in 23 Premier League outings. Newcastle have no desire to sell the star and instead want to build a team around him. And as the Swede is contracted at St James’ Park until 2028, they are in a great position to demand a premium from any interested party.
Alexander Isak to Liverpool—Right choice for Arne Slot?
Arne Slot is reportedly not convinced by either Darwin Nunez or Diogo Jota.
Nunez, who cost Liverpool £85million plus add-ons from Benfica in the summer of 2022, has flattered to deceive in the Premier League. The Uruguayan international has netted just six goals in 34 games across all competitions this season, which is clearly not enough for a striker who cost a premium a few summers ago.
Meanwhile, Jota’s problem does not lie with scoring goals. It is his injury record that continues to let the Portuguese international down. Due to fitness concerns, the diminutive forward has not been available to Slot for large chunks of the season. That, combined with Mohamed Salah’s potential exit on a free transfer at the end of the campaign, might tempt the Reds to launch a big-money bid for a new goal scorer.
Liverpool have set their sights on Alexander Isak well ahead of the summer transfer window thus giving them enough time to formulate a lucrative deal. The 25-year-old has emerged as one of the most-coveted players in world football since his club-record £63m arrival from Real Sociedad in 2022. He is already on 17 league goals and will lead the charge for Newcastle against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium next month.
In comparison to both Nunez and Jota, Isak has a more complete style of play and is a consistent influence in the box. The hold-up play, link-up with his teammates and ability to create goals on his own would add more potency to Liverpool’s attacks.
The Solna-born talent is valued at over £100m by Newcastle which is a mammoth price tag but deserving of his quality and class in the present transfer climate. If Liverpool can thrash out an agreement with Newcastle for Alexander Isak by using Nunez as a makeweight, it would represent a significant coup for Slot.
