Newcastle United kick-off their FA Cup adventure on Sunday by hosting Football League Two side Bromley FC in the third round at St James’ Park.
The Magpies continue to battle on three fronts this season after the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final earlier this week. They took a big leap towards Wembley with a massive result on Tuesday night, beating Arsenal 2-0 at the Emirates in the first leg thanks to goals from Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.
Eddie Howe’s side are on a roll at the moment and head into the fixture as overwhelming favourites against Bromley, who have entered the third-round draw for the first time in their history by beating fellow National League side Solihull Moors.
Newcastle United Team News
Alexander Isak is being assessed after suffering a slight hamstring issue during the win at Arsenal on Tuesday, so the Swedish striker is expected to be rested as a precaution this weekend.
Nick Pope, Emil Krafth, Jamaal Lascelles, and Callum Wilson remain absent through injury, but Bruno Guimaraes and Fabian Schar are both available after suspension.
Predicted Newcastle United lineup vs Bromley (4-3-3)
Goalkeeper
Martin Dubravka has deputised well in the injury absence of No.1 Nick Pope. However, on Sunday, Eddie Howe could hand third-choice goalkeeper Odysseas Vlachodimos only his second start of the season.
Defence
In front of Vlachodimos, alterations are expected at the back. Kieran Trippier and Matt Targett should replace Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall at right-back and left-back, respectively. They will try to be as adventurous as possible to pin Bromley back from the onset.
Free from suspension, Fabian Schar should come straight into the XI. Sven Botman and Dan Burn will drop to the bench, opening the door for Lloyd Kelly to partner Schar in central defence.
Midfield
Wholesale changes are expected in midfield as well, with regulars like Sandro Tonali and Joelinton dropping. Bruno Guimaraes is eligible for selection after serving his ban but Eddie Howe will prefer to have him on the bench. There is a possibility of Lewis Miley, Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock starting in the engine room.
With Miley holding the fort, Longstaff and Willock will get the freedom to venture forward and create problems for the visitors.
Attack
Alexander Isak is set to be rested for this fixture, opening the prospect for Will Osula to lead the Newcastle attack with Callum Wilson still out. Miguel Almiron and Harvey Barnes should get chances to impress on the flank, with the duo hoping to create chances for Osula in the box.
The likes of Anthony Gordon, Jacob Murphy, Joelinton and Guimaraes may not even feature if not required, as Newcastle look to plot a safe passage into the FA Cup fourth round.
