Arsenal mulling over a move for Cunha: A player Arteta needs?

Arsenal are reportedly planning to go all out to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha.

The North Londoners have yet to sign a player during this winter window but remain eager to secure a new attacking-minded player before the transfer deadline on 3 February. Injuries to Bukayo Saka, Ethan Nwaneri and Gabriel Jesus have significantly depleted Mikel Arteta’s frontline, and the Gunners are now expected to seek solutions to their injury crisis in the remaining two weeks of the January window.

According to a report from Spanish outlet Fichajes, Arsenal are willing to make a ‘significant’ effort to secure the signing of Wolves star Matheus Cunha. They are working hard behind the scenes to finalise the deal before the transfer window slams shut.

Cunha, 25, is being courted by several Premier League’s top clubs and it remains to be seen if Arsenal can pull off what would be a major coup of sorts. The Brazilian, who has held talks over a new contract with the Wanderers management, has been the club’s standout performer with 10 goals and four assists in an otherwise torrid campaign.

Matheus Cunha to Arsenal—A player Arteta needs?

Arsenal have had an extremely quiet transfer window despite losing three attackers due to injury. They are now ready to enter the market for a new attacker this month as Arteta looks to make a serious push for the Premier League—a title that has eluded the North Londoners for almost two decades.

And Cunha has been identified by the Emirates Stadium chiefs ahead of the transfer deadline. The 25-year-old has gone from strength to strength at Wolves since arriving from Atletico Madrid initially on loan in January 2023. He has been sensational this season, catching the eye with his technical abilities, link-up play, creativity, movement and goalscoring ability. The Brazilian international’s qualities make him an ideal fit in Arteta’s system at Arsenal.

Having been in good nick since the start of the season, Cunha would be expected to make an immediate impact for Arteta’s side if Arsenal can pull off a deal. He could be a game-changing signing, providing the Gunners with the required spark to boost their title hopes.

However, given Cunha is an asset and on a contract at Molineux until 2027, Wolves will loathe to lose him midway through their battle against relegation. They value the player at over £60million, so Arsenal must fulfil the Wanderers’ financial demands if they are to sign the South American speedster.

Jumping from a side embroiled in a relegation battle to a team challenging for the title should be an easy choice for Cunha. All in all, it will be intriguing to see if Arsenal can get a deal done for Cunha.
