Newcastle United are reportedly planning to make a summer swoop for Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.
The Belgium international, 22, was the subject of interest in the January transfer window but the Merseyside club were reluctant to sell and priced him out of a move. Whatever the Toffees’ situation will be at the end of the season, it will be very difficult for them to hold onto their star midfielder for another year.
According to Football Insider, Newcastle United have compiled a detailed scout report on Amadou Onana, before a planned attempt to sign the Everton midfielder in the summer.
Onana has racked up 50 Premier League appearances since joining Everton from LOSC Lille in the summer of 2022. The defensive midfielder has made 24 appearances across all competitions this campaign so far, racking up two goals and an assist.
Amadou Onana to Newcastle United—Good option for the Toon Army?
One of the big reasons why Eddie Howe’s side have failed to build on last season’s performances is the constant chopping and changing in the starting XI due to vast injury problems and off-field issues. Newcastle United could be without Joelinton for the remainder of the season after undergoing thigh surgery, while Sandro Tonali has been banned for gambling rules breaches last year. In addition, Joe Willock has been out of the side for much of the season with an Achilles injury.
Eddie Howe has not had the liberty to pick his first-choice midfield trio every game, and as a result, he is planning to reinforce this area of the squad in the summer. Everton’s Amadou Onana has emerged as a target for the Magpies.
Onana has shone at Everton again this season, and at 22, he would be an unbelievable replacement for Joelinton. The Belgium international is big, powerful, good on the ball and tenacious in the challenge, and he has proven at Goodison Park since arriving from Lille that he is not afraid to go toe-to-toe with the best players in the Premier League.
Newcastle failed to do much business in the January transfer window in large part due to FFP restrictions, with the club in a position where players must be sold first before any new signings can be conducted. Keeping that in mind, they must look to offload some players in the summer before pumping fresh blood into the squad.
The Toon Army appear interested in securing Onana’s signature as the 22-year-old would undoubtedly improve the overall quality and depth of their squad. For now, Newcastle and their scouts must continue tracking the progress of Onana, who could be eager to jump ship at Everton if they again finish in the bottom half of the table.
