Tottenham Hotspur Striker Target Will Cost £50m: Should Spurs Cough It Up?

Tottenham are reportedly considering a move for Nottingham Forest forward Brennan Johnson should the sale of Harry Kane go through.

The north London club have named their price for Harry Kane as Bayern Munich continue their pursuit of the English star. Bayern’s executives were due to meet Spurs CEO Daniel Levy on Monday to see if an agreement on a fee for Kane can be reached. While the executives didn’t fly to London on Monday to close the agreement, the German champions are willing to bid up to £85m for the striker—still well short of Spurs’ £100m asking price.

Yet, Tottenham have been busy evaluating options to fill the void Kane will potentially leave. According to The Daily Mail, Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson has emerged as a potential option for Tottenham to replace Kane.

Forest boss Steve Cooper doesn’t want to sell Johnson this window, who has admirers at Brentford and Aston Villa, but with FFP dangling around their neck, the club have to make realistic decisions. Forest have rejected Brentford’s offer of £35m plus add-ons but they will consider offers in the region of £50m, the report adds.

Brennan Johnson to Tottenham—Smart signing?

Tottenham are facing a crucial few weeks ahead as they attempt to address key areas of their squad. They have brought in Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison and Manor Solomon since Ange Postecoglou agreed to become the next permanent manager at the beginning of June.

The constant speculation over Harry Kane’s future has been unsettling. And in the event of Kane leaving the club, Spurs have been linked with a number of new strikers over the summer as Ange Postecoglou looks to make sure he has the necessary squad to challenge for a top-four finish next season. And Brennan Johnson is the latest player to fall on the north London club’s radar.

Johnson, 22, starred for Nottingham Forest last season as they avoided relegation from the Premier League. He netted eight goals and registered three assists along the way in the league, as Steve Cooper’s side clinched survival with a game to spare.

Rated highly in England, Johnson looks set to have a bright future ahead of him. At 22, the Wales international is not the finished article yet and can hone his skills under Postecoglou at Tottenham. With players like James Maddison, Son Heung-min, Dejan Kulusevski and Manor Solomon around him, he could thrive in Postecoglou’s attacking and expansive style of football.

Johnson would add a lot of pace, intensity and dynamism to the Spurs attack, whilst improving the depth of the squad. However, the Forest star isn’t quite ready to replace Kane immediately, and even after Spurs sign him, they must go for a proven striker to score goals they will miss when the England international leaves.
