Man City Set To Wrap Up Summer Business With €60m Splash On Midfield Ace

Manchester City have reportedly submitted a second bid worth €60m (£51.5m) including add-ons for Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes. An opening bid of €50m plus €5m add-ons was rejected by Wolves last week.

Kevin de Bruyne’s serious hamstring injury, coupled with the departure of Ilkay Gundogan to Barcelona on a free transfer this summer, has left the Sky Blues in need of another option in the engine room. Mateo Kovacic arrived from Chelsea earlier this transfer window but there is still room for another midfield addition.

According to The Guardian, Manchester City feel confident of striking a deal with Wolves for Matheus Nunes, having already agreed personal terms with the midfielder.

Nunes, 25, arrived at Wolves for a club record £38million fee last summer after helping Sporting CP to their first Portuguese title in 19 years. The Portugal international has scored one goal and added a single assist in 41 games for the West Midlands so far. He was a standout performer during Wolves’ recent 1-0 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford.

But it looks like Nunes’ time at Molineux will be over after just a year, with Man City edging closer to agreeing a fee with Wolves for him.

Matheus Nunes to Man City—Good option for the Sky Blues?

Man City have made some exciting acquisitions so far this summer transfer window, strengthening their squad with the additions of Mateo Kovacic, Josko Gvardiol and Jeremy Doku. They had been looking at West Ham playmaker Lucas Paqueta, but have since abandoned their pursuit of the Brazil international after he was being investigated for alleged betting breaches.

Since then, Pep Guardiola’s side have switched their focus towards bringing in Wolves midfielder Matheus Nunes. Guardiola is a big admirer of Nunes’ talents, stating in 2022 that he is “one of the best players in the world today.”

At Wolves, the Portuguese has played under four different managers, and all have tried to alter his position to get the best out of his talents that are clear for everyone to see. The 25-year-old is a versatile player who can operate anywhere across the middle of the park, and he would certainly excel in a midfield alongside Rodri and Kovacic at City whilst providing cover for the injured De Bruyne.

Technically superb and tactically smart, the ex-Sporting man has the required qualities to fit in Guardiola’s system like a glove. Press resistant and physical, Nunes can drive with the ball—similar to De Bruyne—and would help City control games in the Premier League and Champions League.

If the Treble winners can wrap up a deal for Nunes for €60m, it would represent one of the best signings of this summer transfer window.
