Everton In Talks To Sign Bundesliga Defensive Ace

Everton are reportedly interested in signing Borussia Monchengladbach centre-back Nico Elvedi.

The Toffees are in urgent need of defensive reinforcements, having lost their third game in a row at the weekend. They are languishing at the foot of the table, conceding six goals and failing to score even once in their new Premier League campaign’s opening three fixtures.

According to reputed Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio, Everton have opened talks with Borussia Monchengladbach over the possible signing of centre-back Nico Elvedi.

Having joined Borussia Monchengladbach from FC Zurich in 2015, Elvedi, 26, has gone on to make 270 appearances, scoring 14 goals and providing a further nine assists along the way. The Switzerland international is into the final year of his deal at Borussia Monchengladbach and has turned down the offer of a new one.

As a result, he is understood to be available for just £8million, and Everton are looking to take advantage of the situation.

Nico Elvedi to Everton—A solid addition?

Everton have endured a torrid start to the 2023/24 Premier League season, and unless and until there are major changes made, this side appears destined for relegation. Sean Dyche managed to get the Royal Blues over the line last season but to expect the same this term as well without any backing is difficult as most teams around them have already strengthened.

The Toffees boss is looking to add a new centre-back, a new striker and a central midfielder to his ranks at Goodison Park—and Nico Elvedi has lately emerged as a top target for the centre-back role. The club has been in the market for a new centre-back following the departures of Yerry Mina and Conor Coady earlier this summer.

Elvedi is into the last year of his contract at Gladbach and his desire to move onto pastures new should boost Everton’s hopes of landing him. The Swiss has been a seasoned campaigner in the Bundesliga over the years. He started 32 Bundesliga games last season, chipping in with three goals which highlights his ability to have an impact in the final third.

Elvedi should be a good addition to Merseyside club’s backline. He can potentially form a strong understanding with James Tarkowski in central defence and hopefully stop Everton from conceding so many chances and goals.

The Switzerland international has the tools to become a hit at Everton, especially at a mooted £8million price tag. Having gained a huge amount of experience in his career but is also a long way from being past his best, Elvedi would be an instant upgrade on Michael Keane and lift the level of Everton’s defending under Dyche.
