Tottenham have reportedly entered the transfer race for highly-rated Celta Vigo midfielder Gabri Veiga.
Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou is beginning to stamp his authority on his new club. After confirming the permanent signing of Dejan Kulusevski from Juventus, the north London side have added the likes of Guglielmo Vicario, James Maddison and Manor Solomon so far in the summer transfer window.
According to French outlet le10sport, Tottenham are interested in signing Celta Vigo’s Gabri Veiga but could face competition from London rivals Arsenal and Chelsea.
Veiga, 21, has become one of Europe’s hottest properties following a brilliant 2022/23 campaign. He burst onto the scene last term, scoring 11 goals and registering four assists in 36 league appearances. The creative midfielder made the most notable contribution on the final day of the season in a 2-1 win over Barcelona, helping Celta Vigo avoid relegation from La Liga.
With the Spanish under-21 international having a release clause of £34.6m, there is a scramble for his signature with Ange Postecoglou keen to bring him to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Gabri Veiga to Tottenham—Right option?
After a disappointing 2022/23 season that saw Tottenham fail to qualify for Europe, the club have decided to rebuild the squad under Ange Postecoglou. The Australian tactician has identified the midfield as an area that needs addressing ahead of the new campaign, and has he already brought in James Maddison from Leicester City to reinforce it.
Another midfield signing is understandably wanted at Spurs amid exit links of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. Perhaps, that is the reason why Spurs have entered the race for the signing of Gabri Veiga.
Having previously played as a No.10, Celta Vigo’s current boss Carlos Carvalhal is responsible for turning Veiga into a deep-lying midfielder, and such an alteration in the role could benefit Spurs if they can get a deal over the line. Postecoglou will switch from a 3-4-3 under Antonio Conte to a 4-3-3 formation, with Yves Bissouma likely to be preferred in the destroyer No.6 role ahead of Oliver Skipp whilst Maddison operating as a playmaker.
That leaves a role for a dynamic No.8 who can get on the ball, play incisive passes from deep and make late runs in the box. Veiga would be a perfect fit for that role at Spurs, bringing creativity, energy and goals to Postecoglou’s midfield. He would undoubtedly improve Spurs’ midfield options whilst being an upgrade on Hojbjerg in terms of productivity.
As the transfer window continues throughout the summer, other Premier League clubs and those across Europe may opt in making enquiries for the Spanish under-21 international, which means Spurs should act fast and trigger his measly £34.6m release clause should they believe he would be a solid addition to Postecoglou’s squad.
