Man United Eyeing Premier League Star As David de Gea’s Replacement

Manchester United are reportedly eyeing a move for Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

With the Mason Mount transfer announced on Wednesday, the Red Devils’ attention will shift to the next deal to be done. One of the priorities is to find a new goalkeeper to replace David de Gea, with Inter Milan’s Andre Onana thought to be at the top of manager Erik ten Hag’s wishlist. However, Inter Milan will only consider bids in the region of £50m plus add-ons. Therefore, Onana could prove to be too expensive.

As a result, the Mancunian giants are currently on the lookout for Onana’s potential alternatives. And according to The Daily Mail, Manchester United are now weighing up whether to make a bid for Brighton’s Robert Sanchez.

Robert Sanchez, 25, has fallen out of favour at the Amex Stadium under Roberto de Zerbi, who has made Jason Steele his new No.1. And the Spaniard is likely to fall further down the pecking order following the arrival of Bart Verbruggen from Anderlecht for £16.3m.

With Sanchez now seemingly surplus to requirements for De Zerbi, Brighton are ready to sell him this summer and are looking for around £30m for his services, the report adds.

Robert Sanchez to Manchester United—Right player for Ten Hag?

Erik ten Hag is currently on the hunt for a new goalkeeper after David de Gea was released upon the expiry of his contract at the end of last month.

The Man United boss has made Andre Onana his priority to replace De Gea as the club’s No.1, having worked with the Cameroonian goalkeeper during his time with Ajax. But his £50m price tag is proving a stumbling block, with the club operating on a tight budget this summer. As a result, Man United are on the lookout for his alternatives and Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez has emerged as a potential option.

Sanchez lost his place in between the sticks under De Zerbi last season, despite him putting in some admirable performances for the south coast club. Overall, he has been among the most consistent goalkeepers in the Premier League in the last two years, racking up 29 clean sheets in 90 appearances at the Amex Stadium.

Now, as the Spanish goalkeeper is expected to fall even further down the pecking order after Brighton signed Bart Verbruggen from Anderlecht on Monday, he is ready to leave Brighton. Sanchez could be available at around £30 million, and this has caught the attention of Man United.

Sanchez is a talented goalkeeper and has been selected by Spain ahead of De Gea in recent international squads. He is a Premier League-proven commodity, good with the ball at his feet and distribution—an area where De Gea has struggled with. Plus, available at around £30 million, the 25-year-old becomes significantly cheaper than Onana.

With Ten Hag keen to add a striker, centre-back and another midfielder after Mount to his squad amid budgetary constraints, a move for Sanchez to replace De Gea next season makes complete sense.
