Burnley have reportedly set their sights on signing Coventry City midfielder Gustavo Hamer.
The Clarets have bought in defenders Jordan Beyer and Dara O’Shea, as well as goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux during this transfer window so far. They are understood to be closing in on the loan signing of Soumaila Coulibaly from Borussia Dortmund, as Vincent Kompany prepare for life in the Premier League following their promotion.
According to The Telegraph, Newly-promoted Burnley have made Coventry City’s Gustavo Hamer their next transfer target in what has been a busy transfer window till now.
Hamer, 26, was one of Coventry City’s best performers in their run to the Play-off final last season, scoring the crucial winner in the semi-final win over Michael Carrick’s Middlesbrough. The midfielder, who netted 11 times in 45 appearances last season, has just one year left on his contract with the Sky Blues.
Thus, this stands as the best opportunity for the Championship side to cash in on the former Netherlands under-20 international, having already sold Viktor Gyokeres to Sporting CP earlier this week.
Gustavo Hamer to Burnley—The right option for Vincent Kompany?
Vincent Kompany is keen to reinforce his squad after Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League. Having added to the goalkeeping and defensive ranks, he has switched his focus to signing a central midfielder.
The Clarets boss seems to be not fully convinced with his current crop of midfielders which includes Josh Cullen, Jack Cork, Samuel Bastien, Josh Brownhill and Scott Twine, and he wants to bring in a couple of players in this position ahead of what is expected to be a difficult Premier League campaign. Perhaps, if Kompany is looking for a box-to-box midfielder with an eye for goal as well as the ability to do the hard yards defensively, then Gustavo Hamer would be a right fit at Turf Moor.
Behind Gyokeres, Hamer was Coventry’s most important player as he played a significant role in their Play-Off run last season. But with the Sky Blues failing to clinch promotion, he could be on the move. A combined 21 goals and assists in the Championship is not easy to ignore, and the Brazil-born technician would add some crucial production to Burnley’s engine room.
Going into the final year of his contract, it means that Hamer could be signed for not a sizeable fee that represents his natural ability, having grown into one of the Championship’s best midfield operators in the last couple of seasons. It certainly won’t be straightforward to get a deal over the line, with Championship clubs vying for his signature but with Burnley having achieved direct promotion to the top flight, they should be a great pull for the 26-year-old midfielder.
