Liverpool entered the 2022/23 season with great optimism and spirit after bagging last term’s quadruple chase. They would have loved to challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title again. What unfolded in this recently-concluded campaign surprised everyone.
The Reds had a poor start to the campaign and kept dropping points whilst exiting early from domestic cup competitions. Halfway through the campaign, there were concerns for the first time that Jurgen Klopp’s tenure at Anfield might be coming to an end.
Yet, the magnitude of the Jurgen Klopp-managed side’s comeback was praiseworthy; they made a late surge and rigorous bid for a place in the Champions League, pushing Manchester United and Newcastle United to the hilt. But that proved too little, too late, as Liverpool fell just short and eventually finished fifth on the table.
Amidst a poor campaign in terms of Liverpool’s high standards, there were a few notable performers who kept their heads down and did their bit. That said, here are the three best Liverpool players from the 2022-23 season.
#Alisson Becker
Alisson had one of his best seasons in a Liverpool shirt, and had he not been in goal, Liverpool could’ve easily finished a couple of spots below 5th. He was a colossus in goal, performing with absolute consistency and confidence.
The Brazilian international was easily Liverpool’s standout player from the recently-concluded campaign, retaining his world-class level. In fact, Alisson bailed the Liverpool defence time and again through the season and single-handedly kept them in with a shout for a place in the top four.
#Mohamed Salah
Despite inconsistencies and injuries around him, Mohamed Salah managed to maintain his own personal standards.
While his role shifted from less of a pure goal-scorer to that of a more goal-scorer-chance-creator following the signing of a lucrative new contract last summer, the Egyptian superstar still scored 19 league goals. On top of that, he also supplied 12 assists in a brilliant individual campaign.
Even though he didn’t breach the 20-goal mark in the Premier League similar to the last two seasons, Salah did his job well and will not have too many complaints directed at him.
#Trent Alexander-Arnold
Just like most of his teammates, Trent Alexander-Arnold had a poor start to the campaign. He made glaring defensive errors and cost Liverpool points in many games and came under intense scrutiny.
The England international enjoyed a brilliant end to the campaign though after a tactical tweak that saw him comfortable in a full-back-central midfielder hybrid role. An elite technician on the ball and chance-creator, Alexander-Arnold finished the season with nine assists in 37 Premier League outings.
