Should Everton sign Ings on a permanent deal?

Everton are reportedly interested in signing Aston Villa striker Danny Ings in the ongoing January transfer window.

The Merseyside outfit are in big trouble and fighting relegation for the second season running. Frank Lampard has attracted massive criticism from fans and pundits alike, and his team’s dismal 4-1 home defeat to Brighton has put his position at Goodison Park under serious threat.

According to Mail journalist Dominic King, Everton have had a loan bid rejected by Aston Villa for Danny Ings. There are a number of clubs interested in signing the striker in this window but the only way Aston Villa will allow the player to move is on a permanent deal, King adds.

Ings, 30, moved to Aston Villa for £25m from Southampton back in August 2021. He has netted 13 goals in 47 Premier League appearances, including six in 17 outings this season. The England international came off the bench to score the equaliser for Villa in the Midlands’ derby draw against Wolves on Wednesday evening.

Frank Lampard’s Everton slumped to another defeat on Tuesday night, as their awful 4-1 defeat to Brighton at home left them 18th in the table. It was their fourth defeat in five games, and with another relegation dogfight in store, Lampard is in a perilous position.

The Toffees do need urgent reinforcements to help Lampard get the club out and far away from the relegation zone. A central defender would do well for Everton, who have now conceded 24 goals in 18 games. In addition, signing a striker is the need of the hour.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has endured another injury-hit campaign, while summer signing Neal Maupay has scored just one in 13 league games. 14 goals scored in 18 games is a clear indication that Everton need to dip into the transfer market for attacking reinforcements.

Danny Ings, in that regard, could be a good fit at Everton. Ings had a stellar record at Southampton, where he managed 46 goals and 10 assists in 100 games across all competitions, including 22 in the 2019/20 Premier League season. Overall, the 30-year-old has netted 68 goals in 187 top-flight appearances, thereby, demonstrating his ability to find the back of the net consistently.

The Englishman continues to be a prolific striker at the Premier League level, and could certainly bolster Lampard’s goal-shy Everton side. Ings would push both Maupay and Calvert-Lewin, whilst providing the Toffees with the boost they need in escaping relegation for the second successive season.

As Villa are ready to sell Ings in this transfer window, Everton must quickly table an offer as there are other clubs vying for his signature.
