Leeds United will look to get back to winning ways in the Premier League on Wednesday evening when they play hosts to West Ham at Elland Road.
The Whites have lost their way after a positive start to the season and now find themselves in the bottom half of the table. After back-to-back defeats to Spurs and Man City, respectively, Jesse Marsch’s side did very well to pinch an away point against a high-flying Newcastle United side in their last game.
Back at home, Marsch and his players should be bidding to start the New Year with a win against a struggling West Ham, who have lost their last five league games in a row.
Leeds United are still without Luis Sinisterra, Archie Gray and Stuart Dallas, while Patrick Bamford could return to training from a groin issue before the midweek fixture.
Goalkeeper
Illan Meslier was undoubtedly Leeds United’s best player against Newcastle, making a few vital saves to help his team win a valuable point away from home. He should be raring to keep a second clean sheet in a row.
Defence
A recall at right-back for Rasmus Christensen is expected, with the Dane replacing Luke Ayling. Robin Koch and Liam Cooper should start in central defence as usual, while Pascal Struijk hopes to catch the eye with a strong showing at left-back.
The Leeds defence have to be focused throughout the 90 minutes to keep the West Ham forwards at bay. Diego Llorente, Junior Firpo and Ayling should offer cover for the defensive positions from the bench.
Midfield
Marc Roca may start against West Ham, having come off the bench at half-time at Newcastle last weekend. The Spaniard should replace Adam Forshaw in the first XI and partner Tyler Adams in the middle of the park.
Adams and Roca must not only protect the Whites’ backline but also look to take control of the game from minute one. Sam Greenwood, Mateusz Klich and Forshaw could be involved at some point in the second half.
Attack
Crysencio Summerville is pushing for a start after coming on as a substitute against Newcastle. He could replace Willy Gnonto on the left, while Brendon Aaronson tries to make inroads from the opposite flank. Jack Harrison should retain his place in the No.10 position, hoping to link up well with his fellow forwards and make a difference in the final third.
With Patrick Bamford still out, Rodrigo should be tasked again with leading the Leeds attack. The Spaniard is the club’s top scorer and should fancy his chances against a flaky West Ham defence.
